Biomedical Scientist (Clinical Chemistry) - Registered/Specialist

South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology (SYBP) is on a transformational journey that will fully integrate our existing pathology services, providing the best possible service for patients and clinicians across the Integrated Care System. It is our mission to deliver high-quality and innovative laboratory medicine solutions to patients, clinicians and partners to improve health, add value to patient care, safeguard best clinical outcomes and support the transformation of healthcare across SYB and beyond.

A vacancy has arisen for a Biomedical Scientist to join our friendly and hardworking team in the Clinical Chemistry department at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, which forms part of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology Network. SYBP is hosted by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals (STH).

In addition to providing laboratory services to the STH Central Campus and primary care, the department hosts one of the 3 Gestational Trophoblastic Disease Services in the UK. The successful candidate will rotate between the automated and manual endocrine sections.

We are looking for highly motivated, enthusiastic Biomedical Scientist with a flexible approach to work.

Participation in the out of hours services is an essential requirement, once deemed competent in the relevant areas. The OOH service is provided 24/7, 365 days.


Main duties of the job

Applicants must possess an IBMS accredited degree in Biomedical Sciences, ideally with relevant experience in Clinical Chemistry, and hold current registration with the HCPC. If applying for a Band 6 role, candidates must have completed the IBMS specialist portfolio in Clinical Biochemistry.

Ensure all tests are performed efficiently within the assigned time and in accordance with established protocols to the required standards.

Assist in maintaining high scientific and technical standards.

Maintain complex pieces of laboratory equipment to ensure accurate and reliable results are produced for patients.

Participate in out of hours rotas covering the 24/7 routine Biochemistry service.

To be accountable for own professional actions and work for long periods of time without direct supervision.

Assist in monitoring quality standards, perform audit as directed in line with service needs.

Monitor stock levels and assist senior members of staff with ordering and organising stock as required.

Participate in regular CPD activities to maintain up to date knowledge and experience.

Please also note this vacancy is banded dependent upon applicants experience relevant to this post. The banding of the successful applicant/s will start at Band 5 unless applicants meet the necessary threshold of skills and experience required to start on Band 6.

Please note this is a permanent position to cover a 12 month secondment. In the event the post holder returns to position, the successful candidate may be redeployed to an alternative SYBP laboratory if no open vacancy is available within Clinical Chemistry at the Royal Hallamshire.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* (Band 5 & 6) IBMS accredited BSC in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent
* (Band 5 & 6) Registered with HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist
* (Band 5) Completion of IBMS post graduate registration portfolio or equivalent
* (Band 5 & 6) Commitment to complete and maintain Mandatory Training and required Laboratory competencies
* (Band 5) Commitment to complete the relevant Specialist BMS IBMS portfolio
* (Band 6) IBMS Specialist Diploma in a relevant specialist subject
* (Band 6) Commitment to continuous professional development required to maintain HCPC registration
* (Band 5 & 6) Evidence of continued CPD including relevant courses with regards to H&S, leadership, quality or training


Experience

* (Band 5 & 6) Experience with a range of laboratory techniques
* (Band 6) Detailed understanding of job content
* (Band 5 & 6) Ability to work with other colleagues to improve and develop working practices
* (Band 6) Discipline specific NHS experience in a UKAS accredited laboratory (Clinical Chemistry)
* (Band 6) Experience with a wide range of laboratory techniques in use across discipline
* (Band 6) Experience in the implementation of new methodologies and /or equipment (Band 6)
* (Band 6) Experience with the UKAS accreditation process
* (Band 6) Multi - disciplinary awareness
