Medical Examiner

An exciting opportunity has arisen to be part of the Medical Examiner Service at Wrightington Wigan & Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
We are looking to recruit/appoint 1 Medical Examiner, whom are willing to undertake a minimum of 1 PA of Consultants time (4 hr session morning or afternoon). There is also a requirement for weekend working on a rota basis. The Medical Examiner post is based at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, this is not a remote position.
Applications are invited and welcomed from colleagues both in Primary & Secondary care settings whom have a minimum of 5 years post qualification experience and are GMC Registered. Successful candidates must have completed the online ME Training available on the E-lfh website before commencement in post. There is also a requirement for face to face (remote) training within 6 months of appointment. Main duties of the job
1. Reviewing all non-coronial deaths within both Primary & Secondary Care.
2. Supporting and advising colleagues when discussing proposed causes of death
3. Working closely with Governance, PALS, Morbidity & Mortality
4. Liaising with H M Coroner & Bereaved relatives, where required.
5. Identifying & Escalating themes and trends.

Person Specification
Education & Qualifications
* Medical practitioner registered and licensed to practice with the GMC with 5 years or more experience
* Working knowledge of practice in a healthcare environment, preferably in the UK
* Candidate will have successfully completed the approved components of the national on-line training curriculum as a precondition of employment as a Medical Examiner. Confirmation of appointment is subject to successful completion of 'face to face' component of the national training curriculum. (Note: access to on-line training will be available to all medical practitioners registered & licensed to practice in the UK by the GMC)
Skills
* Up to date knowledge of clinical causes of death, together with death certification requirements and processes.
* Broad Medical Knowledge to enable scrutiny of deaths and ability to recognise learning opportunities
* Ability to demonstrate proportionate and professional judgement to determine the degree to which independent scrutiny is pursued when death certificates have been issued.
Safety & Quality
* Knowledge of clinical governance systems as they affect the work of professionals and organisations
* Ability to identify available data sources to support detection and analysis of concerns and to recognise gaps in available knowledge
* Ability to undertake routine analysis of information on cause of death for local clinical governance and public health surveillance
Communication & Key Relationships
* Ability to communicate effectively within own team and with people in other disciplines (Medical examiner officer's, attending practitioners, Senior Coroner, the Police, funeral directors and Registrars

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
