An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant General Radiologist with subspecialty interest in gynaecological imaging to join the existing team of 50 radiologists at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust. Additional subspecialty interests are also welcomed. This post will be based at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHPNT), primarily Derriford Hospital, commencing at a time of significant developments within the trust.
Main duties of the job Derriford Hospital is a major trauma centre hosting regional specialist units such as renal transplant, complex urology, andrology, hepatobiliary surgery, hepatology, paediatrics, cardiothoracics and neurosurgery. The trust has secured core funding for a fully NHS‑owned Community Diagnostic Centre with CT, MRI, plain film and ultrasound suites, opening in December 2025, which will provide dedicated consultant office and reporting space in a purpose‑built city‑centre environment.
Job responsibilities The post is designed to share responsibility for a comprehensive gynaecological imaging service, including MDT provision, ultrasound, MRI, specialist vetting and fertility imaging review (HSG and HyCoSy). The successful candidate will work alongside the existing three consultants supporting the service. All radiology consultants are actively involved in teaching for the Peninsula Radiology Training Programme, with opportunities for teaching with Peninsula Medical School.
The post‑holder will:
Share an office with other consultant colleagues and a secretary with the current team of radiologists.
Be provided with a PC and PACS workstation, with the option to locate one off‑site to facilitate home working.
Comply with all Trust policies, notably in relation to job planning, appraisal and leave taking in line with departmental and Trust objectives.
Share the on‑call commitment equally with the existing consultants and participate in a 7‑day working pattern supporting general inpatient services across 7 days.
Be supported by the Directorate for any research interests and actively participate in the department’s audit and clinical governance programme.
Person Specification Education, Qualifications & Special Training Essential
Full GMC registration
Fellowship Royal College of Radiologists (or equivalent)
CCT in radiology and entry on Specialist Register (or expected within 6 months of interview)

MD, PhD or other postgraduate degree
Particular Skills and Experience Essential
Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in radiology
Broad skills in general and cross‑sectional imaging including acute imaging services
Ability to offer expert opinion on the full range of standard and subspecialist gynaecological imaging
Able to vet, supervise and report benign and malignant gynaecological MRI studies
Ability to vet, review and report functional fertility imaging (HSG, HyCoSy)
Ability to support gynaecology MDT work in a cancer centre
Able to provide ultrasound supervision and imaging review
Ability to supervise radiology registrars across a broad range of imaging
Willing to participate in radiology on‑call rota

Ability to undertake advanced ultrasound, including contrast and fusion studies
Ability to perform functional fertility studies (HSG/HyCoSy)
Experience of obstetric/placental imaging with MRI/US
