Research Fellow – High-Fidelity Modelling of Hydrogen Combustion Operations

Join Edinburgh Napier University as a Research Fellow in the School of Computing, Engineering & Built Environment, contributing to the Horizon Europe funded project ACCEPT (Advanced Clean Combustion for hydrogen-based Power Technology).

As a Research Fellow you will leverage advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and combustion expertise to develop and evaluate turbulent combustion models focused on hydrogen and hydrogen/natural gas blends in next‑generation gas turbines.

Responsibilities

• Use and refine CFD codes such as OpenFOAM, Converge CFD, ANSYS Fluent or similar custom/commercial solvers; develop and apply Large Eddy Simulation (LES) models for turbulent premixed and non‑premixed hydrogen combustion.

• Design and execute numerical simulations of canonical burner geometries (e.g. V‑flames, bluff‑body stabilised flames) that align directly with experimental work carried out by international partners.

• Work independently on challenging research problems and collaborate within a multidisciplinary, international team in the ACCEPT consortium.

• Participate actively in project meetings, contribute to consortium reports, and communicate findings through presentations and publications.

Qualifications

* PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or Applied Mathematics with a clear specialisation in computational fluid dynamics and/or combustion.
* Demonstrable experience conducting simulations of reactive flows using advanced CFD codes (e.g., OpenFOAM, Converge CFD, ANSYS Fluent).
* Strong theoretical understanding of turbulence modelling and turbulent combustion modelling, particularly LES.
* Proficiency in a relevant programming language (C++, Fortran, Python) for code customisation, scripting, and data analysis.

Benefits

* Employer contributions of 17.6% – 26% (depending on circumstances).
* Minimum 46 days holiday.

Salary and Contract

Salary: £37,694 – £46,049 per annum (depending on experience)

Contract: Fixed Term – 18 months, 35 hrs/wk
