Consultant in Paediatric Critical Care

Closing date: 26 June 2026.

Based at Sheffield Children's Hospital, you will provide consultant cover to the Paediatric Critical Care Unit (PCCU) and support Embrace, the regional paediatric critical care transport service.

Flexibility within the rota is required. A full day on the ICU is allocated 2.5 PA, while a day covering HDU is 2.25 PA. The 10 PA job plan is designed accordingly and includes an equal share of on‑call consultant cover for PCCU as well as support for colleagues during absences. For a part‑time contract a minimum commitment of 7 PA per week is required.


Main duties

Reporting into the Clinical Team Lead, your responsibilities will include:

* Provide consultant cover for the PCCU.
* Continuing responsibility for patients in your care and for the functioning of the PCCU.
* On‑call duties for PCCU.
* Cover colleagues during periods of absence.
* Contribute to the training of individuals in paediatrics, adult intensive care and advanced nurse practitioners.


Qualifications and Training

* MBBS or equivalent.
* MRCPCH / FRCA or equivalent higher qualification.
* Fully registered with the GMC.
* Completion of training in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine (minimum two years) in a unit/rotation approved by the RCPCH national grid training programme with evidence of sign‑off by the PICM ISAC including six months of anaesthetic training.
* APLS / PALS provider.


Experience

* Experience in paediatric intensive care and paediatric high dependency care.
* Experience in leading clinical teams to deliver high quality critical care in the in‑patient setting.
* Ability to offer expert clinical opinions in complex clinical cases.
* Experience in assessing clinical situations and providing clinical advice on critical care remotely.
* Experience in related sub‑specialities.
* Experience in critical care transport medicine.


Knowledge and Skills

* Ability to prioritise and manage clinical workload.
* Basic experience in management, e.g. trainee rotas.
* Clear contribution to audit to effect change.
* Interest in research and undertaken clinical projects.
* Ability to apply research and audit findings to clinical practice to improve patient outcomes.
* Teaching and training medical colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team.
* Management course.
* Experience in quality improvement projects.
* Demonstration of research in Paediatric Intensive Care or Anaesthesia.
* Ability to provide clinical and educational supervision to junior colleagues.
