CompEx Electrical Engineer Wigan £40ph Outside IR35 Contract Role Overview GAP Technical is seeking an experienced and safety-focused CompEx Electrical Engineer to deliver remedial electrical works within ATEX-rated environment.
This role demands an engineer with a deep technical understanding of hazardous-area installations, capable of working with precision on safety-critical systems while ensuring full legislative and standards compliance.
You will be responsible for carrying out corrective actions highlighted during ATEX inspections, supporting site teams with hazardous-area compliance, and maintaining the integrity of Ex-rated equipment.
Key Responsibilities Hazardous-Area Remedial Work Undertake corrective electrical work identified during ATEX/CompEx inspections and compliance audits.
Repair or replace defective equipment such as Ex-rated enclosures, cable glands, junction boxes, containment systems, and earthing/ bonding arrangements.
Ensure all work follows the BS EN 60079 standards and site-specific engineering procedures.
Produce accurate documentation for completed works, including work permits, hazardous-area repair records, and updates to related documents.
Support the close-out of inspection actions and contribute to ongoing site compliance programmes.
Assist with preventative maintenance programmes aimed at preserving hazardous-area safety levels.
Provide technical advice on safe engineering practices within explosive atmospheres.
Safety & Permit Control Work under strict safety protocols, isolation procedures, and permit-to-work systems.
Conduct pre-work checks including atmosphere monitoring, gas testing, and equipment verification.
Identify and report hazardous conditions, asset integrity concerns, or procedural gaps.
Electrical Apprenticeship Strong industrial electrical background in manufacturing, process, chemical, pharmaceutical, or energy sectors.
Ability to interpret hazardous-area classification drawings, Ex certification, wiring diagrams, and engineering standards.
Competence in LV electrical systems, motor control, cable installation practices, and instrumentation interfaces.
Personal Attributes Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to safety-critical work.
Confident communicator able to liaise effectively with engineering, HSE, and operational teams.
