Job Description
The BOM & Costing Build Technician will work directly under the Product Manager and take responsibility for assembling, checking, and entering all Bills of Materials (BOMs) and costings into the MRP system. This role is heavily focused on building out the company's existing product data — taking what already exists in various formats and turning it into clean, structured, dependable information.
A key part of this role is understanding how each BOM flows through the business — from sales configuration to purchasing, fabrication, assembly, and dispatch — and ensuring that every stage has the accurate data it needs to operate smoothly.
Key Responsibilities
* Review existing product information, drawings, build sheets, and component lists to compile complete and accurate BOMs.
* Build new BOM structures inside the MRP system for all standard products, variations, and assemblies.
* Map out how each BOM moves through different operations (fabrication, welding, paint, assembly, finishing) and ensure all required operations are correctly represented.
* Identify missing information, discrepancies, or outdated data and work with the Product Manager to correct it.
* Input accurate costings: material prices, labour hours by operation, subcontract costs, and overheads.
* Check current BOMs for errors or inconsistencies and update them to reflect actual production processes.
* Support the standardisation and documentation of build processes so that production teams have clear, reliable instructions.
* Assist in organising and digitising historic product records to ensure legacy products are correctly structured in the MRP.
Skills & Experience
* Strong attention to detail and a natural ability to organise incomplete or varied product information.
* Comfortable understanding manufacturing workflows and processes across different departments.
* Ability to interpret drawings, specs, and physical products.
* Experience with MRP/ERP systems is helpful but not essential if training is provided.
* Methodical, careful working style with a focus on accuracy and clear documentation.
* Good communication across departments to verify details and ensure alignment.
Why This Role Matters
The accuracy of your BOMs determines how well the whole business runs. These data structures drive purchasing, stock control, labour planning, scheduling, pricing, and final assembly. By ensuring each BOM flows correctly through every operational stage, this role shores up the company's foundations and helps the entire manufacturing process become more predictable, efficient, and scalable.
