Mechanical Technician – Felling, Gateshead

Shift: 07:30 – 16:00 Monday to Thursday, 07:30 – 14:00 Friday
Mechanical Maintenance Technician is responsible for completion of planned and reactive maintenance of the equipment within the allocated areas, ensuring it is carried out safely, promptly and efficiently, minimizing plant downtime and improving machine availability.
Ensure all safety related Engineering Work Requests (EWR) are completed in a timely manner.
* Risk based inspection, test & maintenance of mechanical assets
* Complete maintenance activities in your allocated area as directed by the maintenance supervisor
* Complete planned preventative maintenance work, statutory inspections, breakdown/reactive work within a hazardous area environment
* Attend and resolve equipment breakdowns in a timely manner as directed by the maintenance supervisor or the production shift supervisor
* Ensure all maintenance work is precisely documented on the maintenance system for full equipment history
* Support the maintenance supervisor to ensure the annual PPM schedule achieves above 95% completion
Health, Safety and Environment
* Follow all corporate and regulatory policies, procedures and regulations for engineering and maintenance activities in your allocated areas
* Participate in the completion of risk assessments and job safety analysis
* Work in a safe manner in accordance with agreed risk assessments, job safety analysis, procedures and permits
* Ensure all processes within the workplace are carried out safely, with due regard to the environment and in compliance with company procedures and guidelines
* Report accidents, incidents and near misses promptly
* Maintain a high standard of housekeeping
* Handle and dispose of all waste according to site procedures
* Participate in the site's behavioural based safety observation system within the engineering team rota
* Attend process safety reviews as required (HSE reviews, Hazops, etc.) and contribute to the discussions
* Identify and report potential hazards and address them proactively
Essential
* Trade qualification in mechanical fitting or equivalent (NVQ level 3)
* HNC in mechanical engineering (preferred but not essential)
* 5 years or more in a similar industry
* Previous experience working on a COMAH site desirable
* Knowledge of repairing and maintaining pumps, valves, gearboxes, chain and belt drives, conveying systems, palletisers and filling lines, etc.
* Strong hand‑fitting skills
* Ability to work independently
* Ability to read, interpret and understand technical documents and drawings
* Experience working with permit‑to‑work systems
* Experience working in confined spaces (desirable but training can be given)
* Flexibility to work shifts and weekends when required
* Strong health & safety culture
