At Nottingham City Council we are looking for an exceptional Consultant in Public Health to lead senior strategy, build partnerships and drive innovation that improves lives across the city.
Whats the role really about? You will set strategic direction across public health domains, collaborate across the council, NHS and the voluntary sector, use evidence to drive decision‑making, lead services, and play a central role in delivering the Joint Local Health and Wellbeing Strategy.
Responsibilities
* Develop and translate a strategic vision for public health, delivering clear goals and objectives that achieve positive outcomes for citizens.
* Lead the Health Improvement portfolio, including health protection, inclusion health, healthy ageing and long‑term conditions.
* Build and sustain national, local and sectoral partnerships (Council, NHS, voluntary sector, Integrated Care Board, etc.) to deliver joint action.
* Advocate the Joint Local Health and Wellbeing Strategy, reducing harm from alcohol, creating a smoke‑free city and supporting people to thrive.
* Provide robust decision‑making, good governance and effective options appraisal, balancing financial risk with organisational ambition.
* Drive consistent service delivery through effective project management, performance arrangements and financial sustainability.
* Champion equality, diversity and inclusion throughout service delivery and workforce development.
* Lead change and innovation, exploring new approaches, mentoring teams, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
* Support the Director of Public Health and the Senior Leadership Team in setting and monitoring strategy across the council.
* Manage budgets, line‑manage staff (including trainees), authorise signatories and act as deputy to the Director when required.
* Deliver public health evidence to senior stakeholders, support policy implementation, and advise on statistical/analysis frameworks.
Experience & Knowledge
* Service leadership in a complex organisation, with comparable responsibilities, budgets and resources.
* Track‑record of creating vision, translating objectives into measurable outcomes.
* Strong experience in building service reputations and inspiring continuous improvement.
* Governance, risk balance and practical application of financial and commercial awareness.
* Leadership in equality, diversity and inclusion, with demonstrable commitment across workforce and services.
* Experience of partnership working and collaboration across multiple sectors.
* Strategic insight into local government issues relevant to Nottingham City Council.
* Capacity to plan workforce, manage resilience and wellbeing at a leadership level.
* Project management and change‑leadership skills to drive innovation in service delivery.
* Expertise in public health evidence, data analysis, evaluation frameworks and robust decision‑making.
* Experience in reporting to councillors, senior executive, and providing briefing to the public.
* Understanding of the health and care system, NHS and governmental procurement processes.
* Knowledge of the UK Public Health Register, GMC requirements or equivalent qualifications.
Qualifications
* Master’s degree in Public Health or equivalent.
* Registered with the UK Public Health Register (UKPHR) or eligible for registration within six months of interview.
* Alternatively, GMC Full and Specialist Register with a licence to practice or inclusion in the GDC Specialist List.
Salary
£88,167 to £101,676.01 per year (includes market supplement).
