Overview
We are representing a leading UK construction firm seeking an experienced Geotechnical Principal Design Engineer to join their growing Engineering Design team. This is a senior-level role offering a chance to influence technical direction and design delivery across multiple sectors including water/environment, highways, buildings and more.
Role Purpose
As Geotechnical Principal Design Engineer, you will:
* Oversee and deliver geotechnical design for both temporary and permanent works, ensuring safety, buildability, cost-effectiveness and technical excellence.
* Serve as the technical authority, ensuring governance, design assurance, and compliance.
* Provide mentorship and professional development support to design staff.
* Support procurement and pre-contract works with specialist technical input.
* Liaise with site teams, offering expert guidance and oversight.
* Promote innovation, value engineering, and digital design solutions.
Key Responsibilities
* Ensure compliance and assurance of all geotechnical design outputs.
* Produce safe, efficient designs balancing capital cost and long-term operational value.
* Ensure adherence to CDM, health & safety, and environmental legislation.
* Contribute to and lead initiatives for value engineering and digitalisation.
* Mentor and develop junior/mid-level engineering staff, supporting accreditation with bodies such as ICE, IStructE, etc.
* Share lessons learned and promote best practice across the design teams.
About You
* Engineering degree (or equivalent qualification).
* Chartered status (ICE preferred) or working towards it.
* Significant experience in geotechnical design, ideally with exposure to both temporary works and permanent works.
* Strong technical knowledge: soil mechanics, soil-structure interaction, construction methods.
* Proficiency in CAD tools and geotechnical / structural analysis software.
* Excellent leadership, organisational, problem solving abilities.
* Commercial and contractual awareness.
* Full UK driving licence.
