An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time Gardener / Vegetable grower at The Lingholm Estate on the shores of Derwentwater.
The gardens at Lingholm have a rich history and have recently entered a new exciting chapter with the addition of a new octagonal Walled Garden a few years ago; as well as the reinvigoration of the wider estate. The 30 + acre grounds sit on the shores of Derwentwater near Keswick and consist of self catering holiday accommodation, the Kitchen Walled Garden, the Cafe, an orchard and large meadow and several acres of woodland.
The duties required would be but not limited to,
* Sowing and planting out of seasonal vegetables and the general upkeep of the Walled Garden and open ground vegetable field.
* Working with the Head Gardener and Head Chef to plan for the upcoming and future growing seasons.
* Propagation and growing of shrubs and herbaceous plants in our greenhouses and poly tunnels.
* Helping to keep the self catering cottage gardens looking neat and tidy.
* General gardening, weeding / maintenance on the wider estate grounds.
* Mowing lawns and strimming as well as helping with the continued expansion and improvement of the grounds.
The position will require someone with excellent plant knowledge NVQ Level 2 or higher, who is keen and passionate about gardening, they must be able to work well within our small existing team but also be happy to work independently.
* The successful candidate will have a background / experience of a working estate
* An understanding of vegetable growing and their care is essential.
* The candidate will have previous experience using gardening equipment, rotavators, mowers etc. and machinery e.g. compact tractors and trailers. Although on site specific training will be provided candidates need to be competent in their usage.
* They will be able to identify different plant species and correctly implement the required care for each.
* They will also have knowledge in the propagation of plants.
* They must be polite and able to communicate well as the Walled Garden is open to the public year round and they will definitely be asked questions by the public.
* A full clean driving license is required.
* No accommodation is provided.
