Asset Replacement & Strategy Engineer – 82318

This permanent role reports to the Asset Management – Distribution Manager and is based at our Crawley office. The salary is £68,144.00 per annum, with a 3% bonus potential. After a 6‑month probationary period, blended working is available (3 days in office, 2 days remote).

Job Purpose

The Asset Management Directorate is pivotal in navigating regulatory demands such as RIIO-ED2 and beyond. This role, within the Asset Strategy team, supports the development and assurance of inspection, maintenance, replacement, and refurbishment strategies across a diverse portfolio of assets. It plays a central role in maintaining network resilience, efficiency, and fit‑for‑future status.


Principal Accountabilities

* Develop policies to reflect medium‑to‑long‑term innovative asset strategies that optimise performance and provide reliable Health, Criticality, and Risk Indices.
* Maintain asset standards as required.
* Prepare programmes of work for inspection, maintenance and asset replacement/refurbishment activities using available data.
* Contribute to the budgeting of these programmes, reconciling volumes, unit costs and budget provision while promoting efficiency.
* Track progress and report on delivery status, working with internal and external partners.
* Prepare business cases, engineering options and seek financial approval at the appropriate development stage.
* Provide asset management guidance, collating data and liaising on operational restrictions and potential work interventions.
* Support regulatory submissions, providing analysis and commentary for strategic decision‑making, including CEO reports and regulator submissions.
* Develop ideas into working concepts to aid delivery in collaboration with the innovation hub.
* Carry out asset fault rate analysis and develop tools for a predicted condition‑based programme of work.
* Conduct network incident reviews/investigations with suppliers and industry bodies.
* Provide support during system emergencies (storm role).


Qualifications

* HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering with substantial experience.
* Membership or working toward a professional body such as IET or IAM.
* Knowledge of relevant Electrical and Utility industry Regulations.
* Understanding of design, operation and failure modes of electrical distribution assets, including inspection, maintenance and asset health assessment.
* Ability to communicate at senior level and present information clearly.
* Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
* Experience analysing and reporting complex data.
* Proficient with Databricks and Power BI for large‑scale data analysis and trend tracking.
* Good written communication skills for concise reports and presentations.
* Excellent interpersonal skills for effective partnership engagement.


Desired

* Degree in Electrical Engineering or Power Systems Engineering.
* Chartered Engineer registered with a professional body.


Specific Experience Areas

* Knowledge of network assets through operational experience or alternative means.
* Knowledge of underground cable assets.
* Knowledge of secondary substation assets.
* Knowledge of overhead line network.
* Knowledge of instrumentation, control and telemetry equipment.


Training Opportunity

If you do not possess the full range of essential skills and competencies, there may be an opportunity for further training. Candidates lacking all core grade competencies may be considered for a lower grade until competencies are developed.
