Purpose of the Role
The Mechanical Estimator will be responsible for managing the full estimating process, ensuring accurate and competitive pricing for mechanical building services projects. This includes the preparation of detailed costings, tender documents, and proposals for submission, as well as working closely with internal departments and external suppliers to ensure all tenders are aligned with company objectives. The role is key to supporting the business in achieving its revenue targets and improving tender conversion rates.
Key Responsibilities
* Manage the full estimation process, from receipt of enquiry through to formal tender submission.
* Read, interpret, and scrutinise tender specifications and drawings to assess scope and requirements.
* Schedule and track all tenders and quotations within the Contracts Department.
* Develop and implement a robust tendering process, including the rollout of estimating software.
* Prepare and issue subcontractor and supplier enquiry packages, ensuring timely and compliant responses.
* Complete accurate take-offs and measurement of pipework services from consultant drawings.
* Carry out site visits to understand project scope, constraints, and access requirements.
* Liaise with subcontractors and specialists on-site to ensure comprehensive and competitive pricing.
* Prepare Tender Cost Reports and analysis for internal review.
* Develop value engineering options to optimise project budgets without compromising quality.
* Produce high-quality tender documentation for Director-level approval.
* Submit tenders via email or online tender portals.
* Attend mid- and post-tender interviews as required, demonstrating detailed project knowledge.
* Provide estimating support to delivery teams post-handover throughout the contract lifecycle.
* Effectively manage multiple concurrent tenders, ensuring deadlines are met.
Targets & KPIs
* Tender Value Target: £5.6 million per month (first 6 months), increasing to £8 million per month by month 12.
* Tender Conversion Rate: Improve from 10 percent to 20 percent within 12 months.
Required Skills & Experience
* Proven experience in a Mechanical Estimator role within the building services or M&E sector.
* Strong understanding of mechanical systems and drawings, including HVAC and pipework.
* Excellent numerical and analytical skills.
* Proficient in Excel and experienced in estimation software (or willingness to implement and use).
* Strong communication and negotiation skills with internal teams and external suppliers/subcontractors.
* Able to prioritise and manage workload effectively across multiple projects.
* High attention to detail and accuracy in all tender documentation.
