Job Description:

This is a unique and exciting opportunity for an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist to take on a clinical leadership role within a high-quality, innovative regional service dedicated to the mental health and well-being of veterans. The post offers the rare chance to work directly with NHS England on service development while continuing to provide direct patient care to a complex and rewarding client group.

The role combines strategic service development with hands-on clinical work, providing exposure to the NHSE commissioning process and enabling the post holder to make a tangible impact on patient pathways. You will be part of a highly skilled and supportive multidisciplinary team with a shared commitment to excellence in veterans’ mental health.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

* Conduct comprehensive assessments, including diagnosis, medication reviews, risk assessments, crisis planning, and self-help strategies for veterans with complex mental health presentations.
* Provide follow-up care and case management for clients as clinically indicated.
* Offer consultant-level advice and input to the multidisciplinary team through case discussions, joint consultations, supervision, and tailored training.
* Deliver consultant input to the triage system for service referrals.
* Act as a Responsible Clinician (RC) for patients on Community Treatment Orders within the service.
* Undertake Mental Health Act and domiciliary assessments as required.
* Provide second opinions for consultant colleagues when requested.
* Support clinical governance processes, including audits, incident investigations, and complaints.
* Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation on the electronic patient record system.

Leadership & Service Development

* Work collaboratively with service leads to develop and implement a collaborative care model for veterans’ mental health.
* Contribute to the design and delivery of care pathways and service priorities in line with regional and national objectives.
* Promote integrated, respectful multidisciplinary working.
* Engage with local service user and carer groups to inform service development.
* Provide clinical and professional leadership within the veterans’ service and the wider service line.

Teaching & Supervision

* Provide clinical supervision to junior doctors, trainees, and multidisciplinary colleagues.
* Offer teaching sessions for undergraduate medical students and postgraduate trainees.
* Support the professional development of team members through mentorship and role modelling.

Person Specification

* Full GMC registration with a current licence to practise.
* On the GMC Specialist Register for General Adult Psychiatry or within six months of CCT at the time of interview.
* Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent higher qualification in psychiatry.
* Section 12(2) and Approved Clinician status (or eligibility to obtain within 3 months).
* Expertise in assessing and treating complex mental disorders, including trauma-related presentations, in military personnel and veterans.
* Experience in working with severe and enduring mental illness and managing high-risk cases.
* Knowledge and application of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, and safeguarding principles.
* Experience in evidence-based treatment approaches, including pharmacotherapy.
* Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team and demonstrate clinical leadership.
* Commitment to clinical governance, including audit, serious incident investigation, and complaint handling.
* Additional postgraduate qualifications in psychiatry, research, or medical education.
* Trained as an Educational Supervisor or Consultant mentor.
* Experience in service development and policy implementation.
* Research involvement and publication in relevant clinical areas.
* Experience in teaching both small and large groups.
