Senior gas sensing scientist / engineer

Stratford-upon-avon
NevadaNano
Scientist
Posted: 25 November
Offer description

NevadaNano is a rapidly growing startup transforming the oil and gas industry through real‑time operational visibility, analytics, and intelligent automation. Our IIoT SaaS platform is live and in production, serving energy companies with scalable, cloud‑connected monitoring and control capabilities across upstream and midstream operations.

We are now entering our next phase of growth — scaling the platform, expanding feature sets, and onboarding enterprise customers — and we are looking for a Director, Platform Software Architect, to help us evolve our technology foundation to support that journey.

Position Overview

As a Software Architect, you will play a critical leadership role in shaping the future of our IIoT platform. You will guide architectural decisions across the stack, ensuring performance, scalability, security, and reliability as we scale number of connected devices and multi‑region deployments. This role requires deep technical expertise in cloud architecture, IIoT systems and software design best practices. You will work closely with engineering, product and DevOps teams to refine our architecture, accelerate development velocity, and maintain technical excellence as we grow.

Key Responsibilities

* Architectural Leadership
o Own the evolution of the platform’s architecture to support scale, performance, and availability.
o Lead design of modular, cloud‑native microservices, data pipelines and APIs.
o Champion architectural standards, tech debt management and scalability best practices.
o Evaluate and select appropriate technologies and frameworks.
o Collaborate with product and engineering leads to translate business goals into product roadmaps and architectural designs.
* Software Development Process
o Guide the team in defining and improving the software development life cycle (SDLC).
o Champion best practices in code quality, CI/CD pipelines, testing and documentation.
o Establish and maintain architectural governance processes, including design reviews and code audits.
* Agile Methodologies
o Define, implement and continuously improve engineering workflows (e.g., CI/CD, code review, branching strategies, testing practices).
o Actively participate in Agile processes (e.g., sprint planning, retrospectives).
o Collaborate closely with Product Owners, Scrum Masters and development teams to ensure architecture aligns with Agile delivery goals.
o Support continuous integration, continuous delivery (CI/CD) and DevOps practices.
* Governance & Standards
o Establish and enforce best practices in software development, documentation, testing, deployment and monitoring.
o Define architectural principles and software development standards to ensure consistency and quality across teams.
o Drive technical governance and compliance with security, performance and scalability requirements.
* Platform Scale & Performance
o Identify and resolve bottlenecks in data ingestion, processing and delivery pipelines.
o Design for high‑availability and low‑latency, especially in bandwidth‑constrained oilfield environments.
o Guide multi‑tenant architecture enhancements to support enterprise onboarding and secure data isolation.
* Industrial Integration
o Deployment to multiple clouds, on‑prem and inside customer deployments.
o Design integrations with LDAR, CMMS and other systems used in the industry.
o Integrations with customer message buses like Kafka and MQTT.
o Collaborate with edge engineers to ensure resilient, secure edge‑to‑cloud and cloud‑to‑edge communication in the field.
* Security & Reliability
o Enforce security practices across the platform, including encryption, authentication and access controls.
o Contribute to compliance and operational resilience (SOC 2, ISO 27001, NIST, etc.).
* Team Collaboration
o Work cross‑functionally with engineering, DevOps and product teams to align technical design with product goals.
o Work with Sales and Product management to provide customer focused insights on UI and user experience.
o Communicate architectural decisions to technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
o Mentor developers and contribute to architectural reviews and high‑impact technical decisions.
o Build upon pull requests for thorough code reviews.

Required Experience

* 15+ years in software development, with 7+ years in a senior or architect‑level role.
* Experience working on cloud‑native SaaS platforms (OCI, AWS, Azure, GCP).
* Proven experience with IIoT, edge computing or industrial data systems.
* Proficient in designing event‑driven and microservices‑based architectures.
* Experience scaling systems with Kubernetes, serverless and infrastructure as code (Terraform, Helm).
* Deep understanding of message buses (Kafka, MQTT etc.) and time‑series data.
* Strong grasp of system security, network architecture and data lifecycle management.
* Excellent problem‑solving and analytical skills.
* Familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies.
* Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work cross‑functionally with various teams.

Nice to Have

* Background in oil & gas or energy sector (field operations, telemetry, control systems).
* Familiarity with time‑series databases (InfluxDB, TimescaleDB) and streaming tools (Kafka, Spark).
* Exposure to AI/ML, analytics, anomaly detection or predictive maintenance use cases.

Why Join Us

* Be part of a mission‑driven team shaping the future of oil & gas technology.
* Join a product that is already live in production, with strong market traction and real‑world impact.
* Play a key leadership role as we scale both the platform and the business.
* Competitive compensation, equity and benefits.
* Flexible, remote‑friendly culture with strong focus on ownership and delivery.
* Innovative environment: Work on cutting‑edge SaaS technologies with a forward‑thinking team.
* Growth opportunities: Continuous learning and professional development in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment.
* Collaborative culture: Be part of a supportive and inclusive team that values collaboration, creativity and excellence.

Desirable Traits

* Love of startups and small companies.
* Collaborative – enjoy working on multiple tasks with multiple groups.
* Self‑starter – do what needs to be done without being told what to do.
* Customer focused – passion to give customer best experience possible.
* Be willing to wear multiple hats – do what needs to be done.
* Creative – ability to search for and implement new ideas and solutions.
