Assistant Technical Officer
Band 3 Fixed‑term contract until 30.11.2026
Hours: 37.5 per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working
Department of Microbiology
Our Microbiology department processes over 220,000 specimens per year and is a busy yet friendly environment.
Key Responsibilities
* Technical
o Receive and process patient samples
o Maintain equipment, including automated analysers, incubators and safety cabinets (daily and weekly operations)
o Prepare and record quality assurance checks on analysers and materials
o Identify and correct clerical, technical and system errors; report and document corrective action
o Book Sample/QC/IQA for all bench work as part of the specimen reception team
* Laboratory Informatics
o Comply with local and national policies for secure, confidential processing and storage of patient and laboratory information
o Collect, receive, match, verify, label and enter sample requests; identify and report mislabeling or matching failures
o Transcribe and record results obtained by BMS staff
* Administrative
o Manage stock control of reagents and consumables, placing orders when necessary
o Organise daily duties to ensure quality service delivery
o Handle telephone enquiries, referring issues to BMS staff as appropriate
o Prioritise daily workload and participate in routine tasks as required
o Maintain accurate records of all communications and ensure messages are forwarded correctly
* General
o Collect samples from pathology support areas, wards and other departments if required
o Clean and maintain equipment and work areas
o Foster good work relations with all staff and promote teamwork
Qualifications & Requirements
* GCSEs in Science, Maths and English (grades A – C) or an NVQ Level 3 in Pathology or equivalent clinical laboratory experience
* Good communication skills
* Ability to work independently or as part of a team
* Physical fitness and health, capable of lifting and handling tasks
