The Position
NHS Orkney is seeking an Exceptional Leader to deliver a robust Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) service that safeguards patients, staff and visitors across our healthcare system. As the Board’s designated Infection Control Manager, you will hold overarching responsibility for infection prevention, medical device decontamination and organisational cleaning standards.
Responsibilities
• Provide strategic leadership on Healthcare‑Associated Infections, ensuring best practice is embedded throughout the organisation and aligned with national policy and regulatory requirements.
• Lead the development and delivery of the Board’s IPC work‑plan, oversee outbreak management and act as the principal clinical adviser on all matters relating to infection prevention and control.
• Work closely with the Consultant Microbiologist, Estates and Facilities teams and external partners to maintain high standards of safety, compliance and performance.
• Manage the Infection Prevention Service and contribute to Board‑level reporting and assurance processes.
The Candidate
• First‑level Registered Nurse with current NMC registration, educated to master’s level and ideally holding a post‑registration qualification in infection prevention and control.
• Significant recent NHS experience, including a senior nursing role, and proven project management capability.
• Experience in policy and service development, quality improvement methodologies and strong financial awareness.
• Demonstrated strategic thinking, effective management and leadership, sustainable change delivery, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, negotiation abilities and team‑based partnership working.
• Strong digital literacy and a commitment to ongoing professional development.
Location, Working Pattern and Contract Duration
Location: The Balfour
Working pattern: Full Time, 36 hours per week
Contract: Permanent
Condition of employment: Must be a resident of the United Kingdom.
Benefits and Salary
Salary: Band 8b.
Remote Islands Allowance: £1,719 pro rata per annum for residents of Orkney.
Eligibility for relocation assistance: up to £8,000, contingent on candidate eligibility.
