Job Title: Head of Engineering (Facilities Maintenance) £90k
Location: Central London
Reports to: Account Director / General Manager
Contract Type: Full-Time, Permanent
Position Summary:
We are seeking a highly experienced, proactive, and strategic Head of Engineering to lead the delivery of all engineering and technical services at a landmark, high-rise commercial office complex in Central London. This flagship site encompasses multiple tenants, critical systems, and high-profile stakeholders, demanding the highest standards in building performance, compliance, and customer service.
The successful candidate will oversee a large on-site engineering team, manage specialist service providers, and ensure the safe, efficient, and sustainable operation of the building’s engineering infrastructure, including HVAC, BMS, electrical systems, vertical transportation, life safety systems, and energy management.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Team Management
* Lead and develop a multi-disciplinary team of M&E engineers, supervisors, and technicians.
* Foster a culture of performance excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.
* Oversee recruitment, training, and succession planning within the engineering team.
Operational Excellence
* Ensure the effective operation, maintenance, and optimisation of all engineering systems and equipment across the site.
* Implement and maintain PPM schedules in line with statutory requirements and best practice.
* Manage reactive and planned works to ensure minimal disruption to tenants and operations.
* Champion high standards of health, safety, and environmental compliance in all engineering activities.
Compliance & Risk Management
* Ensure full compliance with statutory, contractual, and regulatory requirements, including SFG20, HTMs, and British Standards.
* Maintain up-to-date documentation, including risk assessments, method statements, and asset registers.
* Act as the site lead for technical audits, compliance inspections, and insurance visits.
Energy & Sustainability
* Drive energy efficiency initiatives and carbon reduction strategies in collaboration with the client’s sustainability goals.
* Monitor and report on energy usage, identify trends, and implement improvement actions.
* Support the delivery of ESG initiatives and innovative technology solutions.
Stakeholder Engagement
* Act as the principal point of contact for all engineering matters for the client, occupiers, and other service providers.
* Build strong relationships with client representatives and demonstrate technical leadership and credibility.
* Provide clear and regular reporting on engineering performance, risks, and improvement initiatives.
Project & Capital Works
* Oversee the planning and delivery of lifecycle replacement projects, capital upgrades, and refurbishments.
* Manage budgets, procurement, and contractor performance for all technical projects.
* Ensure all project works are integrated smoothly with business-as-usual operations.
Key Requirements:
* Degree or HND/HNC in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
* Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartership (IMechE, IET, CIBSE) desirable.
* Minimum 10 years’ experience in engineering management roles, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership position within a high-rise or large commercial property.
* Deep knowledge of building services systems (HVAC, electrical, BMS, life safety, lifts, etc.).
* Proven experience managing large in-house teams and multiple specialist contractors.
* Excellent communication, leadership, and client engagement skills.
* Familiar with CAFM systems, BMS platforms, and energy monitoring tools.
* Experience working in a critical or semi-critical environment (e.g. data centres, trading floors).
* Demonstrable success in driving sustainability and energy performance improvements.
* Commercial awareness and budget management experience.
* Calm under pressure, strategic thinker, with a hands-on approach when needed.
