Technical Lead – Atmosphere Management and Radiation Monitoring – Submarines
Location: Barrow‑in‑Furness, Cumbria
We are recruiting a Technical Lead to join our Rolls‑Royce Submarines team based in Barrow. The role focuses on ensuring that the design and as‑built atmosphere management and radiation monitoring systems integrated into Dreadnought Class submarines meet the requirements and needs of the Submarine Delivery Agency and the Royal Navy.
What You Will Be Doing
The Dreadnought Alliance (DNA) is a collaboration between the Ministry of Defence (MoD), BAE Systems and Rolls‑Royce. Within the Alliance, the Submarine Systems (SubSys) team operates under the leadership of the Engineering Systems Owner (ESO). The Technical Lead will join the Survival Systems Group and be responsible for the remaining systems:
Responsibilities
* Advise the SubSys Engineering System Owner on approval of design and build acceptance of atmosphere management and radiation monitoring systems as integrated.
* Provide assessment and advice against specified requirements and standards, balancing time and cost constraints.
* Delivery of assurance to the Platform Authority in line with Dreadnought Alliance technical governance for:
o Atmosphere Analyser and atmosphere monitoring systems
o Air Particle Detector and Direct Gamma Monitoring System
o Installed RADIAC System
o Air Purification System
o Air Purification Revisionary Systems
* Technical problem solving and management planning.
* Produce technical documents assessing system capability or performance.
* Undertake assessments of supportability and maintainability.
* Provide expert advice and guidance in your technical area to solve complex technical problems and identify risks.
* Assess and advise on system design change, defects, contract requirements and hazard management.
* Assess and manage risks and opportunities.
* Maintain and, when appropriate, write system guidance documents in support of projects and industry.
* Oversee decisions impacting submarine capability, including support, future development, and maintainability.
* Collaborate with stakeholders from Dreadnought Alliance, ship builders, project planners and other SMEs.
* Ensure the submarine is safe, delivered on time and within budget on behalf of the customer.

SDA Civil Service Requirements
* Professionally Registered or equivalent knowledge, skills and experience.
* Member of a relevant Professional Engineering / Science Institute or equivalent body.
* Relevant Level 4 (or higher) qualification or equivalent experience: certificate of higher education, higher apprenticeship, higher national certificate, level 4 award, level 4 certificate, level 4 diploma, level 4 NVQ.
* Experience providing technical advice and delivery of successful engineering outcomes, in a variety of contexts.
* Strong knowledge and engineering experience of atmosphere management systems; ideally submarine, otherwise ability to learn from basic principles.
* Strong knowledge and engineering experience of radiation monitoring systems; ideally submarine, otherwise ability to learn from basic principles.
* Awareness of submarine design, concession management, design configuration control, technical requirements evaluation & acceptance.
* Awareness of quality assurance activities and acceptance processes within maritime build environment.
