Job overview
As a registered, accountable and autonomous senior midwife to act in the best interests of your patients at all times and take personal responsibility for your actions and decisions.
To be responsible for assessment, planning of care, implementing and supervising safe and compassionate care, and evaluating the effectiveness of care on the Lunar Birth Centre of the maternity unit.

Main duties of the job
· Have delegated responsibility for 24-hr cover within the maternity unit. This may include rotation to formulating off-duty to ensure adequate and appropriate cover and when required, liaising with and deploying staff on a shift by shift basis, according to service need.
· Monitor the activity within the unit on a shift basis and to risk manage the work of the Lunar birth Centre.
· Lead a program of standard setting and audit to implement change that meets patient requirements and improves standards.
· Be an autonomous practitioner providing clinical leadership and expertise in all aspects of midwifery practice, which includes providing, direct care to women.
· Delegate clinical tasks to staff members on shift as appropriate e.g. care of complex cases, routine checking of equipment.
· Facilitate the development of all staff including junior medical staff and support workers through teaching and empowerment.

Management
· To act as an effective role model and demonstrate effective organisational and leadership skills.

· To ensure that optimal use is made of available resources to provide appropriate and effective cover over any 24 hourperiod.
· To reassess the staffing rotas in the light of unexpected absences and adjust accordingly to meet the needs of theservice.
· To escalate to midwifery management team about activity in the Unit and staffing levels and to ensure that appropriate manpower data is available on an ongoingbasis.
· To assist in orientation programs and familiarise staff with the organisational and clinical demands of inpatient postnatal services.
· To ensure that all medical and midwifery students are working in a positive learning environment.
· To carry out on behalf of the HMS, annual staff appraisals of junior midwives and maternity supportworkers.
· To create and maintain an effective communication system between all staff groups working in maternity. To supervise the maintenance of stores and equipment and with due economy requisition supplies, repairs and replacement ofequipment.
