Base: Barking Community Hospital
Trainer: Dr Alex Olaye, Consultant Psychiatrist
We are looking for a resident doctor for 3 days per week Monday to Wednesday working 9 am to 5 pm at Barking Hospital. No on-call shifts included in this role.
Main duties of the job
There are 2 medical leads for the MHWT West locality. The over-all caseload is divided between Dr Alex Olaye, Consultant Psychiatrist (who will be the post-holder’s clinical supervisor & line manager) and Dr Basit Hussain, Consultant Psychiatrist.
The trainee shares office space with a number of other Core-trainees-providing opportunities to network/ organise exam practice as necessary.
The team manager is the operational lead for the service. She is line manager for non-medical members of the team, including secretarial & administrative staff.
The team consists of CPNs of varying levels of seniority, Social Workers including AMPHs, one senior OT, StR (Support & Recovery time workers) and administrative staff.
The trainee will be approached by team members to discuss patient-related issues of relevance, prescribe medication/ blood tests etc and there will be regular joint assessments/ reviews of patients with them.
There is secretarial and administrative support available.
The post-holder is expected to maintain high standards of professionalism & maintain patient & carer respect, dignity & confidentiality at all times in their dealings with patients and cares & the team.
Working for our organisation
This is a friendly & supportive multidisciplinary community setting providing opportunities to gain experience in assessing and managing chronic complex mental disorder and associated comorbidities and risks. You will work as part of the multidisciplinary team, consisting of experienced community psychiatric nurses, social workers and occupational therapists.
The team follows a ‘recovery approach’ with an objective of enabling people with long term mental health conditions to achieve the best possible quality of life and reach their potential, with a view to eventually encouraging a life independent of psychiatric services.
Hence in addition to complex medical treatment in treatment resistant illness and managing patients on depot, Clozapine and Lithium, this service provides an opportunity to learn about and offer varied psychological and social aspects of treatment to patients and carers.
Weekly zoning meetings to grade risk, opportunity to attend multi-professional meetings for high-risk cases, regular joint home assessments in addition to CPA assessments and a weekly physical health clinic led by the trainee provides an exciting and versatile learning experience.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The duties of the post, performance criteria and the learning opportunities available are set out following the structure of the Psychiatry Specialty Curriculum (as approved by PMETB, 2006), which in turn, is based on the headings of the GMC’s Good Medical Practice.
1. Providing a good standard of practice and care
·Undertake clinical assessment of patients with mental health problems
You will conduct 2 follow up clinic(s) per week and 1 new patient assessment clinic; this will take place most of the times, at the same time as Dr Alex Olaye clinic. You will see patients whose diagnoses will include Bipolar affective Disorder, Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective disorder, Treatment resistant Depression/ Anxiety, Complex Personality Disorder etc. Your medical secretary will arrange appointment times for patients in your clinic. You will liaise with care-coordinators to arrange home visits and inform the team secretary of this so as to update your RIO-diary to reflect your appointments.
Training in communication and interview skills as appropriate to the practice of psychiatry is available and will be tailored to the needs of the post holder.
You will maintain accurate, legible, contemporaneous and useful clinical records for all patients in whose care you are involved.
