Job Purpose
The Deputy Manager supports the Nursery Manager in the day-to-day running of the setting, helping to ensure high-quality care, education, and compliance with statutory and safeguarding requirements. The role includes leading practice on the floor, supporting staff, and contributing to the effective management and development of the nursery.
Key Responsibilities
* Support the Nursery Manager in the overall management and organisation of the setting
* Act as Manager in their absence
* Lead by example, delivering high-quality early years practice in line with the EYFS / Curriculum for Wales
* Support staff with planning, observations, assessments, and next steps
* Mentor, supervise, and support staff, including new starters and apprentices
* Ensure safeguarding, child protection, health & safety, and welfare requirements are met at all times
* Support children with Additional Learning Needs (ALN), liaising with parents and external professionals where appropriate
* Maintain accurate records, policies, and documentation
* Build strong relationships with parents/carers and promote positive communication
* Support recruitment, staff deployment, rotas, and daily ratios
* Contribute to inspections (e.g. CIW / Ofsted) and quality improvement processes
Essential:
* Level 3 qualification in Childcare / Early Years (or above)
* Previous experience in a senior role (Room Leader, Senior Practitioner, or similar)
* Strong knowledge of safeguarding, child protection, and health & safety
* Excellent leadership and communication skills
* Ability to motivate and support a team
* Confident working with children aged 0–5
