An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and motivated full-time general surgeon to join the general surgery team at Barnsley Hospital on a permanent contract.
This job provides an opportunity to have structured weekly clinics, theatres, endoscopy sessions, cancer MDT meetings and on call sessions at Barnsley Hospital.

This post will appeal to an appropriately trained surgeon who has a proven sub-specialty interest in Upper Gastro Intestinal services. The appointee will have the enthusiasm to work with colleagues to develop the service in line with national guidance.

Main duties of the job
The candidate will join a team of five upper gastro-intestinal surgeons (this post being the sixth member of the team). The post holder will work as part of the team to provide surgical treatment for a range of gastro-intestinal conditions that are treated at Barnsley Hospital.
Core Clinical Duties Include:
* Weekly operating theatre lists
* 1-2 outpatient clinics per week
* Weekly MDT meeting (Wednesday AM)
* 24 hour on call every 2 weeks (non-resident overnight)
* Weekend on call every 8 weeks
* Endoscopy sessions weekly or every 2 weeks
* Clinical administration sessions
* Core SPA time

Person Specification
Research, Teaching, Audit and Management
Essential:
* Evidence of the ability to conduct medical research.
* Ability to critically evaluate medical research.
* Experience of training medical undergraduates and postgraduates.
* Training the Trainers.
* Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
* Understanding of current NHS issues.
* Efficient management of resources.
* Organisation and time management skills.
Desirable:
* Evidence of research published in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at national or regional conferences.
* Appraisal training.
* Experience of supervising research by junior staff.
* Completion of Education Supervisor training.
* Ability to organise and present audit.
* Management experience.
Qualifications
Essential:
* Full GMC registration.
* Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the date of interview), CESR or European community Rights
Desirable:
* Relevant higher degree
Experience
Essential:
* Experience of the management of all common General Surgical/Colorectal conditions.
* Experience of Laparoscopic Day Surgery.
* Ability to perform upper endoscopy and JAG accredited or working towards JAG accreditation).
Desirable:
* Broad clinical experience in General, Colorectal and Laparoscopic Surgery.
Training
Essential:
* Higher Surgical Training in General Surgery and obtained CCST/CCT or equivalent with minimum 2 years experience in Laparoscopic GI Surgery.
Desirable:
* Training in sub-specialist area of practice.
* Experience of laparoscopic exploration of the bile duct.
