Join to apply for the Cell Lifetime Modelling Engineer role at Vertical Aerospace.
Our Mission
At Vertical Aerospace, we are pioneering the way for electric aviation. The VX4, our eVTOL (electric, vertical, take-off and landing), ‘zero emissions’ aircraft will set a new safety standard for how we navigate the sky.
We aim to ‘redefine’ aerospace best practices, moving beyond legacy processes. As we grow from a prototype business to a scaling SME, our goal is to have the VX4 in service by 2030.
What To Expect
As a Cell Lifetime Modelling Engineer, you will contribute to the development of advanced battery systems for our VX4 aircraft. Your expertise will focus on lithium-ion cell performance and lifetime modelling, ensuring high standards of reliability and efficiency.
Your typical day may involve developing cell-level lifetime models with MATLAB, collaborating with the electrochemistry team for validation strategies, and working with battery and aircraft modelling teams to integrate models across systems. Strong communication of complex insights and teamwork are key to success.
What You’ll Do
* Develop empirical cell-level lifetime models considering stress factors affecting capacity loss and resistance increase.
* Create modelling documentation to improve accuracy and coverage (TRL levels).
* Design test plans and collaborate with electrochemistry engineers for validation, balancing data resolution and testing capabilities.
* Communicate insights effectively through summaries and visualizations.
* Maintain and adhere to modelling standards.
* Work with data analysis tools and performance models with the electrochemistry team.
* Integrate cell models with pack, powertrain, and vehicle-level models.
* Collaborate with industrial and academic partners on analysis and modelling activities.
* Perform other tasks related to performance, lifetime, and safety attributes within the electrochemistry team.
What You’ll Bring
* Academic qualifications (BSc, MSc, PhD) or equivalent.
* 1-2 years experience with commercial lithium-ion cells, understanding ageing mechanisms and stress factors.
* Experience in empirical cell lifetime modelling.
* Skills in statistical analysis and data visualization.
* Proficiency in MATLAB, Simulink, and version control (e.g., Git, Bitbucket).
* Problem-solving skills from first principles to detailed simulations or tests.
* Experience with lithium-ion performance data and experimental test design.
Desired Skills
* Strong electrochemistry background and understanding of lithium-ion cell functions.
* Experience with cell ageing in industrial applications like EVs.
* Knowledge of equivalent circuit models, Simscape, and physics-based modelling (SP, DFN).
* Experience in aerospace is a plus.
