Overview

Are you looking for a new opportunity? Are you a reliable, hardworking individual who thrives in a busy environment?

The Blood Sciences Laboratory are looking to register reliable, hardworking individuals who would thrive in a busy environment and who are available to work ad hoc part time placements from Monday to Friday covering busy periods between the hours of 5pm and 9pm. Our placement opportunity includes receipt and sorting of pathological specimens from a variety of locations, data entry into Epic and preparation prior to analysis.

We are keen to hear from students who would be available to cover placements over their holiday periods.


Main duties

* To perform sample receipt and data entry.
* To perform a range of routine Healthcare Science activities, e.g. sample preparation and storage.
* Continued rotation through the different sections including Biochemistry, Haematology and Specimen Reception.
* To work flexibly in reflection of service needs this may include an extended working day and/or participation in delivery of a 24 hour, 7 days per week service.
* Follow policies and procedures ensuring that the quality management system of Pathology is complied with.
* The work of the service brings staff into constant contact with human body fluids, tissues and hazardous chemicals. This may include blood, pus, urine, faeces and respiratory secretions.

Person Specification

Qualifications

* Essential: GCSE Maths and English (A-C) or equivalent
* Essential: NVQ Level 3 Qualification in relevant subject (or equivalent) or demonstrable equivalent experience of a range of routine and non-routing healthcare science duties
* Desirable: GCSE in Science (A-C) or equivalent

Experience

* Essential: Demonstrable experience of a range of routine and non-routine Healthcare Science duties equivalent to an NVQ Level 3 / Diploma
* Desirable: Relevant experience of working in the NHS and/or a Pathology laboratory
* Desirable: ECDL

Knowledge

* Essential: Demonstrable knowledge of a range of routine and non-routine healthcare science duties equivalent to an NVQ Level 3 / Diploma
* Desirable: Knowledge of Pathology IT systems
* Desirable: Knowledge of Quality Management Systems

Skills

* Essential: Willingness to undertake cross training to extend skill set to deliver role
* Essential: Good communication skills
* Essential: Demonstrable interpersonal skills - can work as part of a team
* Essential: Ability to concentrate for prolonged periods of time
