Teach a Class 6 SEN group on a Narrowboat in Burnley. Alternative Provision focus on SEMH & ASC. Temp-to-perm. Start ASAP or September 2026.
The Opportunity
Are you looking for a teaching role that is truly out of the ordinary? We are recruiting for a Lead SEN Teacher to deliver high-impact education aboard a Narrowboat classroom in Burnley.
This Alternative Provision utilises the calming, therapeutic environment of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal to support a Class 6 group of students. These learners often face barriers in mainstream settings, including SEMH, ASC, and ADHD. By moving the classroom to the water, you will provide a unique "reset" for their education.
The Role
This role combines Project-Based Learning with Outdoor/Nautical Education. You will be responsible for the safety, wellbeing, and academic progress of a small cohort in a mobile, water-based setting.
Key Responsibilities include:
Nautical Pedagogy: Integrating Key Stage 3/4 Curriculum with life skills learned through the canal environment (navigation, water safety, environment studies).
EHCP Tracking: Delivering targeted support to meet Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) milestones within a non-traditional setting.
Crisis De-escalation: Using Positive Behaviour Management in a confined, high-engagement environment.
Therapeutic Support: Supporting students with EBD (Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties) and Trauma through the "Blue Spaces" therapeutic concept.
Candidate Requirements
Experience: Previous work in a PRU (Pupil Referral Unit), Alternative Provision, or Youth Work is essential.
Resilience: You must be comfortable working on the water and in varying weather conditions.
Qualifications: We welcome Qualified Teachers (QTS/QTLS) or Unqualified SEN Teachers with significant experience in SEMH or Outdoor Education.
Safety Conscious: A high level of awareness regarding Water Safety and Safeguarding is paramount.
Why Teach on a Narrowboat?
Unrivalled Engagement: The novelty and tranquility of the boat significantly reduce anxiety for students with Autism and sensory needs.
Small Class Size: Focus on deep 1:1 Mentorship with a maximum of 6 students.
Burnley Base: Centrally located in Burnley with easy access to Lancashire's canal network.
