Overview

The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust seeks to appoint a Consultant Surgeon with a subspecialty interest in colorectal surgery to complement the department (early rectal cancer; advanced pelvic malignancy; colorectal cancer; inflammatory bowel disease).

You will join a general surgical department including Colorectal, Upper-GI, Breast and Vascular Services. The Colorectal Surgical Team comprises nine Consultants (eight whole-time equivalents). The successful applicant will provide colorectal and general surgical services in theatre, outpatient and ward settings, with a focus on minimally invasive approaches including transanal microsurgery (TEM) and robotic-assisted colorectal surgery.

There are separate specialty rotas for seven-day services; the successful candidate will contribute to both the general surgery emergency rota (1 in 12) and the colorectal weekend and Bank Holiday rotas. The Trust conducts outpatient and elective surgical activity at New Cross Hospital and Cannock Chase Hospital, and the post will involve delivering services on both sites.

This is a role within a large tertiary and district general hospital with a strong record of high-quality care and a wide range of services in the west Midlands.

Responsibilities

Minimally invasive colorectal surgery is well established within the team, including TEM and robotic-assisted procedures. Responsibilities include delivering colorectal and general surgical services in theatre, outpatient and ward settings, and contributing to the two-site service model.

There are opportunities to engage with research and education in the colorectal unit and on a wider regional basis.

You will be expected to demonstrate a high level of competence across all aspects of acute and elective colorectal surgery.
