ADAS ALM, a member of RSK Group Ltd, is looking to recruit a motivated and ambitious Senior Livestock Consultant to join the team, working primarily on delivering and expanding our range of poultry consultancy projects.
The role requires the skills to develop and deliver technical and strategic consultancy and the successful candidate will be expected to provide leadership and support to others. Key criteria include an ability to prepare detailed technical reports for a range of different clients and to gather and analyse data. Good interpersonal skills are needed for successful liaison with poultry industry stakeholders. Previous experience of undertaking literature reviews would be an advantage.
A broad understanding of current poultry sector issues, policy impacts and trends in production costs is essential for the role. Whilst several years of experience in all these areas would be beneficial, full training will be provided.
The successful candidate will have transferrable skills which will be applied periodically for projects focusing on other livestock sectors, particularly pigs.
There will be immediate involvement in gathering information from stakeholders and in writing reports as part of a project team. Over time, the successful candidate will be expected to take a leading role in key work areas and act as a project manager. The candidate will also be expected to lead, develop and maintain relationships with key clients.
Whilst this role will be predominantly home-based, regular attendance at an ADAS office will be required initially, to undertake training. The successful applicant must also be able to travel throughout England and Wales and occasionally Ireland and elsewhere for short periods of time. This will be for meetings with existing and prospective clients and to attend relevant events to represent ADAS and for training purposes.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will work with a wide range of government, sector body, corporate and farming clients. The emphasis will be on professionalism, good writing and communication skills and an ability to handle and present information and data to clients in reports and through presentations. The successful candidate will also be expected to generate and follow up sales leads and prepare costed bids for new consultancy projects, using ADAS methodologies.
Person Specification
ADAS requires its employees to demonstrate energy, responsibility and curiosity, which lead to the delivery of results. In addition to these general attributes, applicants will need to demonstrate/ possess the following:
1. Minimum of three years' experience in the livestock sector (preferably with poultry) or in a consultancy related role.
2. A working understanding of policy, environmental and efficiency drivers affecting the poultry sector.
3. A degree or a postgraduate qualification relevant to agriculture, or a related degree (e.g. in another science subject) with relevant practical experience.
4. A broad understanding of the structure and key players in the UK poultry sector.
5. Evidence of strong leadership skills with the ability to develop collaborative relationships both internally and externally.
6. Excellent report writing skills, an ability to evaluate information and to draw conclusions and recommendations.
7. Good computer literacy, using the full suite of Microsoft office programs including MS Word to write reports and MS Excel for data handling.
8. Understand and communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
9. Full driving licence and own transport.
10. Flexibility in the range of work undertaken.
Other Desirable Attributes
11. Sales experience, generating consultancy or other work within the agricultural sector.
12. A working understanding of the UK pig sector, key players and current issues.
13. Experience in managing and/or mentoring staff.
