About the role
You will support the current CNS with ongoing development of the oesophagogastric service and support patients with cancer of unknown primary. You will promote a high‑quality specialist service that provides care, information, support and management to patients, their families and carers. You will work closely with specialist nursing, allied health professionals, MDT teams across oncology and surgery, and liaise with primary care and other specialist teams to ensure continuous care.
Main duties and responsibilities
* Develop and provide comprehensive clinical care, specialist advice and support to patients in the oesophagogastric cancer/CUP service.
* Work autonomously as a specialist practitioner alongside MDT members.
* Provide information and specialist knowledge for the support and education of patients and carers.
* Improve care by establishing strong communication links with specialist MDT and liaising between primary and secondary teams; influence best practice at local, network, and national levels.
* Participate in education activities for colleagues to ensure appropriate knowledge and skills.
* Act as a key worker in accordance with National Standards, providing continuity for patients and families throughout the care pathway.
* Assess patients’ needs, conduct holistic needs assessments and formulate care plans.
* Provide flexible cover within the oesophagogastric cancer/CUP service to ensure appropriate specialist coverage.
Person specification – Qualifications
* Evidence of ability to study at level 7.
* Evidence of continuing professional development.
* Experience of team leadership or management skills.
* Experience of applying research evidence to own clinical practice.
* Demonstrated knowledge or transferable skills within upper GI/cancer speciality.
* Knowledge of cancer treatments.
* Awareness of clinical governance issues and measures of quality.
* Experience of delivering educational teaching sessions.
* Ability to prioritise workload of self and others.
* Enhanced communication skills within multidisciplinary teams.
* Ability to work effectively within a team and independently.
* Commitment to studying for any required postgraduate training needs and within the ACCEND framework.
* Knowledge of local and national cancer policy and programmes/initiatives.
