Clinical Scientist

The Clinical Measurement / GI Physiology department at UHD is a busy, friendly, multi‑disciplinary service providing high quality care, primarily delivering a range of diagnostic investigations in gastroenterology and colorectal surgery.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, qualified and experienced member of the team who has a background working as a Clinical Scientist, GI Physiologist or Healthcare Science Practitioner to support the clinical portfolio of the service.
The post holder will perform and report on a variety of gastrointestinal and other clinical measurement procedures, including:
* High‑resolution oesophageal and anorectal manometry
* Ambulatory intra‑oesophageal pH and impedance monitoring
* Laryngo‑pharyngeal reflux assessment
* Endoanal ultrasound
* PTNS
* Hydrogen/methane breath testing
* Capsule endoscopy
* Sacral nerve neuromodulation service including device management
They will support Gastroenterology Consultants, Upper GI surgeons, Colorectal Consultants, Gynaecology Consultants and Respiratory Physicians. We also provide diagnostic testing to other hospitals in the region.
This is a full‑time, permanent band 7 role based at UHD. The service currently runs Monday to Friday with potential to provide services over seven days in the future. Part‑time hours may be considered.
The post holder will conduct a wide range of physiological measurement investigations in both adult and paediatric medicine, will provide analysis and high‑quality diagnostic reports, and will work with multidisciplinary teams reporting test results and contributing to discussions on patient management and care pathways. They will also be a key member of the pelvic floor service, and may have the opportunity to be involved in multidisciplinary collaborations. They will support and mentor STP trainees and other junior members of the team.
If the role or service relocates as part of a planned move, excess mileage will not be reimbursed. Travel from home to the new work base will be classed as a normal commute. Any other changes will be managed under Trust or national terms and conditions.

Job Responsibilities
The post holder will have a minimum degree level qualification in a science subject and post‑graduate experience and/or qualifications in the specialism. They will have experience of research and an interest in research activity. Completion of STP, ASP or equivalent training and experience in GI Physiology is particularly desirable.
This role is an ideal opportunity for a candidate who is due to complete the STP and who may benefit from an experienced and supportive team to help transition into a first newly qualified role.
Applications will also be considered from applicants with different healthcare experience and relevant qualifications wanting a patient‑facing role, e.g. from AHP professions, clinical engineering or specialist nursing. A comprehensive training programme will be provided with the potential to complete the Accredited Scientific Practitioner (ASP) training programme in GI Physiology where appropriate.
The successful candidate will ideally have professional registration or will be working towards registration if newly qualified. They will ideally be an accredited independent practitioner with the Association of GI Physiologists (AGIP) or will be supported to achieve this once in post.
The post holder will possess excellent written communication skills, have the ability to train junior staff and be able to organise a busy workload whilst remaining calm under pressure. They must be self‑motivated, able to motivate other team members to meet service needs, flexible, positive, a strong team player with initiative, imagination and determination.

Person Specification
Qualifications and Experience
* Experience in a related healthcare setting, ideally >3 years
* Practical and theoretical knowledge of the specialist area plus working knowledge of associated physiological measurements disciplines
* Qualified clinical scientist in GI through equivalence, STP or ASP
Professional Registration
* Registered with The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and/or AHCS
* Member of the Association of Gastro‑Intestinal Physiologists (AGIP)
* Independent practitioner of AGIP
Aptitude and Skills
* Skilled in performing, analyzing and reporting on a wide range of upper and lower GI physiology investigations
* High levels of competency in computing skills, e.g. spreadsheets, databases
* Excellent interpersonal/communication skills at all levels
* Empathetic and caring
* Highly motivated and enthusiastic
* Must be able to cope with emotional and difficult circumstances
Physical Requirements
* Must be able to assist with patient transfers, manual handling and hoists
* Must be able to stand for prolonged periods
* Must be able to wear PPE and work in hot and sometimes cramped conditions
