We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to join a collaborative project between the University of Liverpool, Liverpool John Moores University, Farm Urban Ltd and the University of Manchester. This position (provisionally Grade 7) is funded through the Royal Society APEX Awards. The overarching aim of the project will focus on advancing sustainable indoor farming by improving nutrient monitoring and plant physiological assessment within controlled environment agriculture (CEA). You will lead and support experimental trials in hydroponic lettuce production, exploring how nutrient imbalances affect plant physiology, yield, and crop quality. Working at the interface of plant science, sensor technology, and sustainable food systems, the PDRA will play a key role in adapting cross-sector innovations for agricultural use and disseminating outcomes to both academic and industry stakeholders. Dedicated time for professional development will be built into the role, supported by training opportunities. You will work closely with Dr Hannah Whitby. You will also spend time visiting the project partners including Professor Bruce Greeve (UoM) and Dr Richard Webster (LJMU). Much of the work will be undertaken at Farm Urban, a Liverpool based Vertical Farming company. You should have a PhD (or thesis submitted, awaiting examination) or equivalent experience in Plant Physiology, Crop Science, Controlled Environment Agriculture, or a closely related field. If you are still awaiting your PhD to be awarded you will be appointed at Grade 6, spine point 30. Upon written confirmation that you have been awarded your PhD, your salary will be increased to Grade 7, spine point 31. This is a fixed term post for 21 months from January 2026.
