Dental Hygienist / Dental Therapist

Responsibilities
* The post holder will be expected to work with and under the supervision of Consultants and other clinicians within Dentistry to provide oral health education, periodontal treatment, re‑assessment and discharge patients back to their general dental practitioner after discussion with the Consultant whose care the patient is under.
* These patient groups will include head and neck oncology patients, those on anti‑angiogenic medication, as well as medically, physically, mentally compromised patients, anxious children and adult patients with developmental disorders such as cleft lip and palate, patients post dental trauma and patients who have undergone variety of oncological treatments including dental implant rehabilitation.
* This would include:
o To work on oncology new patient clinics, providing prevention advice pre‑radiotherapy treatment and pre‑anti‑angiogenic medication use.
o To manage their diary and liaise with the administrative team.
o To manage a patients treatment pathway and liaise with consultants.
o Liaise with the Haematology department regarding any pre‑operative cover.
o Liaise with the Clinical Nurse Specialists in various teams regarding patient welfare when necessary.
* Visits to medical wards to provide limited treatment for particularly debilitated patients, such as post‑maxillectomy patients, post‑fracture patients etc.
* Providing treatment for referrals from the Consultant in Paediatrics, Orthodontics and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
* To assess continually any student dental hygienists on training to ensure the highest standards and assist in logging student records.
* The post holder will be responsible for the cleanliness and day‑to‑day routine care of instruments, operating unit, chair and associated surgery equipment, reporting any faults or damaged instruments.
* Compliant with mandatory training and continued professional development.
* To respond in a timely manner to referrals from GDPs and Community Dentists and other referring members of the wider medical team.
* To maintain accurate and timely clinical records, adhering to accepted good practice with regard to patient confidentiality and consent.
* To audit the service to evaluate the effectiveness of service provision and ultimately to look at clinical outcomes.
* To participate in the Maxillo‑Facial Departments Clinical Governance programme including the Study/Journal club.
* To be involved where appropriate with audit and research programmes.
* To adapt flexibly to changes which occur in the service and assist in implementing such changes.
* To work independently and provide high quality care to patients.
