Job overview

We are looking for a new Consultant to join the Team at LTHTR.

This will be a permanent full-time post within the Adult Allergy and Clinical Immunology services and will be based at Royal Preston Hospital, (although applicants who would like a part-time post will be considered).

The successful candidate must be on the specialist register (Immunology) of the GMC or be eligible to be on the specialist register within six months of the date of the Appointments Advisory Committee.

The Allergy and Clinical Immunology service is well established and has been providing clinical care since 1979. This is a regional service and serves a population of approximately 1.6 million people. The service is Specialised Commissioned for both Adult Allergy and Immunology.

You must have completed the approved Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians Training Board (JRCPTB) curriculum in Immunology or demonstrate (to PMETB or an Appointments Advisory Committee) evidence of equivalence in knowledge, training and experience of Immunology and the care of patients with allergic and immunological disorders.

You must also hold the MRCP (UK) or show evidence of equivalent training and experience.

The successful applicant will be based at the Royal Preston Hospital, but under exceptional circumstances, may be expected to undertake sessions across our other Hospital Site, at Chorley and South Ribble District General Hospital.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Duties

You will provide a clinical service for the investigation and management of patients with disorders of immunity, principally primary and secondary immune deficiency and allergy, however also of patients with other clinical conditions in which disorders of the immune function is thought to play a role. The service will be for GPs, Hospital colleagues and will be conducted by regular outpatient clinics, written and telephone correspondences.

You would also advise on the management of inpatients under the care of other Consultants on request.

You will supervise the specialist nurses, who work directly with the consultants in the clinics, and will also jointly with the other consultant oversee Immunoglobulin therapy, subcutaneous immunotherapy, monoclonal antibody therapy and oral/ drug provocation tests. The post holder jointly with the consultants will also liaise with the specialist nurses to manage home therapy for immunoglobulin and C1 inhibitor therapies.

OTHER GENERAL DUTIES

Clinical

1. Supervise when necessary, allergen immunotherapy, oral provocation test, drug provocation test and immunoglobulin replacement therapy.
2. Assume a continuing commitment for the care of patients, ensuring in consultation with colleagues, that adequate arrangements are made for cover of leave and off duty periods.
3. Undertake administrative duties involved with the care of their patients.
4. Promote high professional standards of clinical care of the patients and the health and safety of the environment.
5. Maintain continuing medical education at least to the requirements of the Royal Colleges.
6. To be responsible for achieving relevant UK accreditation for allergy and primary immunodeficiency.
7. Participate and contribute to the Northwest Allergy and Clinical Immunology Network
8. Contribute with the other consultants to update clinical guidelines and protocols used for the management of patients.

You will participate in clinical audit and with the Trust’s arrangements for Clinical Governance.

Laboratory Duties

Applicants with both ACLI (Allergy, Clinical and Laboratory Immunology) and ACI (Allergy and Clinical Immunology) training will be considered for this post. If a ACLI trained applicant is appointed, the post holder will:

9. Contribute to the day-to-day running of the laboratory.
10. Participate in audit within the Immunology laboratory.
11. Participate in research and development.
12. Liaise with the Consultant Clinical Scientist, Consultant Immunologist and the Lead BMS in relation to the scientific and clinical validation of pathology reports and the provision of the Immunopathology service.
13. Provide clinical interpretive advice to requesting clinicians.
14. To participate in Renal Multidisciplinary Team Meetings.
15. Be a member of the Pathology Management Board.

On Call Duties

The service will not offer an out-of-hours on-call at the moment. Access to the service out of hours will be covered by answer phone. It is expected that a prompt response will take place the following working day.

Teaching

You would be expected to assume an important teaching role. This will include:

16. The teaching of junior medical staff, where appropriate.
17. Assistance with the training of other junior medical staff in appropriate techniques.
18. Assistance with the training of non-medical staff
19. Giving immunology presentations within other directorates and general practitioners as appropriate.

21. Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
22. MBBS or equivalent
23. Specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or be eligible for registration within six months of interview)
24. Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
25. Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT

26. Evidence of academic excellence in Clinical Immunology.
27. MSc/MD/PhD

Experience and Skills

28. Trained Clinical Supervisor
29. Experience in the diagnosis and clinical management on in-patient, out-patient and home therapy patients with immunodeficiency and management of allergic disease.
