Overview

JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Teacher - Post-Primary

REPORTS TO: Principal

This job description includes the professional duties of a teacher under the Teachers' (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1987 and the relevant sections of the Education Authority policies.


Responsibilities

1. 1. Exercise of general professional duties
1. A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require, including working under the reasonable direction of the principal or the board as applicable.
2. 2. Exercise of particular duties
1. A teacher shall perform, in accordance with directions reasonably given by the principal, such particular duties as may be assigned from time to time.
2. Where applicable, a teacher shall perform duties as reasonably directed by the board or the principal of any school in which they work.
3. 1. Planning
1. Planning and preparing courses and lessons;
2. Teaching to the educational needs of pupils assigned, including setting and marking work in and outside school;
3. Assessing, recording and reporting on pupil development, progress and attainment.
4. 2. General
1. Promoting the general progress and well-being of pupils and groups assigned.
2. Providing advice and guidance on educational and social matters, further education and careers; maintaining relevant records and reports.
3. Maintaining appropriate records on pupils’ personal and social needs where not compromising a teacher’s position.
4. Communicating with parents and other approved bodies outside the school.
5. Participating in meetings for the purposes described above.
5. 3. Assessment/Reporting
1. Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references for individual pupils and groups, where appropriate.
6. 4. Staff Development/Professional Development
1. Participating in any required staff development and performance review.
2. a) Reviewing teaching methods and programmes of work; b) Participating in further training and professional development.
3. Advising and cooperating with the Principal and other teachers on the development of courses, teaching materials, programmes, methods and pastoral arrangements.
7. 5. Discipline/Health and Safety
1. Maintaining good order and discipline and safeguarding health and safety on and off school premises during authorised activities.
2. Participating in meetings relating to curriculum, administration or pastoral arrangements.
8. 6. Public Examinations
1. Participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations, assessing pupils, and supervising during examinations.
9. 7. Review and Development of Management Activities/Administration
1. Contributing to the selection and professional development of other teachers and co-ordinating work of teachers.
2. Participating in review, development and management of curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions.
3. Participating in administrative tasks including supervision of support staff and provision of equipment/materials.
10. 8. Number of days/Hours of work
1. Full-time teachers shall be available for 195 days per year, with up to 190 days involving classroom teaching.
2. Available to perform duties at times/places specified by the Principal or Board; standard annual hours target.
3. Teaching load limits per week and required breaks; specific rules for nursery and primary settings as applicable.
4. Other standard terms including break times and year definitions.
11. 9. Staff cover
1. Supervising and teaching pupils when a teacher is absent, subject to enrolment size constraints and agreed arrangements.
12. Additional note

This job description will be reviewed in light of changing circumstances and is a guideline within which the individual works. Other duties of similar nature and appropriate to the grade may be assigned from time to time. Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland at the date of taking up appointment

Hold a degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification or teaching qualification which has prepared the applicant to teach Mathematics as his/her main subject

Demonstrable 3 months experience of teaching Mathematics in a post-primary school setting by the date of taking up appointment

Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post

SECTION 2 - ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

The following are additional essential criteria measured during the interview/selection stage.

Knowledge

Demonstrable current knowledge of the subject area; current teaching approaches for all-ability settings; knowledge of assessment approaches to promote progress; knowledge of positive behaviour for learning (e.g., Restorative Practice); knowledge of the range of qualifications available within the subject; knowledge of the Northern Ireland Curriculum; knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding and Child Protection policy/practice.

Skills / Abilities

Effective communication and interpersonal skills; ability to provide a supportive and challenging learning environment; initiative, problem solving and flexibility; ability to work collaboratively; ability to motivate self and others; willingness to enhance professional competence.

SECTION 3 - DESIRABLE CRITERIA

Desirable criteria will be used to determine a manageable pool of candidates and applied in the order listed. Demonstrate on your application how you meet any desirable criteria.

Desirable Criteria / Method of Assessment

Demonstrable minimum of 6 months’ experience teaching Mathematics at KS3, KS4, and KS5; experience with digital media to enhance teaching and learning; willingness to assist with extracurricular activities; experience teaching in a non-selective all-ability school.

DISCLOSURE OF CRIMINAL BACKGROUND

In regulated activity, an Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background will be required. The post-holder will bear the cost of the Enhanced Disclosure Certificate. Details of payment will be provided at pre-employment.
