Job overview

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, experienced and proactive person to support our gastroenterology dietetic service. You will ideally have experience in gastroenterology, but consideration will also be given to Band 5/6 dietitians who are keen to gain experience in this speciality.

You will be part of the gastroenterology service across the York and Scarborough Hospital sites. Clinical leadership is provided by a Band 7 Clinical Lead Dietitian and Professional Lead. Operational support is provided by the Team Manager and the Senior AHP Operational Manager.

There will be opportunities for involvement with dietetic audit and service developments in clinical areas such as inflammatory bowel disease, functional gut disorders, coeliac disease or hepatology.

You will be a key member of the gastroenterology and nutrition multi-disciplinary teams, providing specialist dietetic service to complex medical and gastro. There will also be dietetic gastroenterology outpatient clinics supporting a wide range of patients including those with IBD, IBS, coeliac disease, liver disease and pancreatic insufficiency.

You will be primarily based at York Hospital but will also be required to travel to Scarborough Hospital, to support the dietetic caseload.

The ability to transport yourself across the locality during the course of a working day is therefore required.

Main duties of the job

The gastroenterology dietitians deliver a comprehensive in- and out-patient service to patients in a wide range of clinical areas and across different clinical pathways, including:

1. Coeliac disease
2. Inflammatory bowel disease
3. Functional bowel disorders including advising on the low FODMAP diet
4. Liver disease
5. Pancreatic insufficiency
6. Gastroparesis
7. Individuals with eating disorders admitted for medical stabilisation and re-feeding
8. Intestinal failure
9. Gastroenterology home enteral feeding caseload

You will be able to demonstrate skills and experience in oral, enteral and parenteral nutrition support. Training will be provided as required to support assessment and treatment of patients on gastroenterology pathways.

There will also be the requirement to support the caseload of the wider department at times.

The department places a strong emphasis on supervision, training and education, including:

10. peer support and regular clinical and managerial supervision
11. a well established programme facilitating the training of dietetic students from Leeds Beckett and Hull Universities, including utilising the peer-assisted learning model
12. delivery of a variety of rolling training programmes for other healthcare professionals across the Trust, relating to nutritional care
13. opportunities to participate in audit, research and quality improvement projects
14. development of leadership skills within all role

Education, Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria

23. HCPC Registered Dietitian
24. Evidence of relevant CPD activities

Desirable criteria

25. Evidence of post graduate training within specialist area
26. Practice placement supervisor qualification

Experience & Knowledge Required

Essential criteria

27. Experience in a relevant junior role, including the management of a range of conditions, with evidence of additional knowledge acquired through formal and informal clinical supervision
28. Evidence of ability to manage complex clinical presentations
29. Experience in delivering clinical treatment within specialist area
30. Understanding of current issues in health care Standards of Professional Practice
31. Experience in assessment and provision of specialist equipment

Desirable criteria

32. Experience in the use of outcome measures to evaluate clinical treatment
33. Developed / Specialist clinical skills within relevant area
34. Experience of training/supporting others (including students) within specialist clinical area
35. Delivery of relevant audit/research projects
