Behavioural support assistant

Protocol Education
Support assistant
Posted: 8 June
Offer description

Every classroom has pupils who need a little extra support to thrive. Some need encouragement. Some need consistency. Others need someone who understands that behaviour is communication.

We're looking for Behaviour Support Assistants to work across a range of SEMH schools, alternative provisions, and specialist settings. This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who can build trust, stay positive, and help young people navigate challenges both inside and outside the classroom.

You'll be supporting pupils who may have experienced barriers to education and helping them develop the confidence, resilience, and skills they need to succeed.

What you'll be doing:

Supporting pupils with social, emotional, and mental health needs

Building positive relationships and acting as a trusted role model

Helping students engage with learning and classroom activities

Using de-escalation strategies to support positive behaviour

Working alongside teachers, pastoral teams, and external professionals to provide tailored support

Celebrating progress, no matter how small it may seem

We're looking for someone who:

✔ Has experience working with young people, either in schools, youth work, care, coaching, or support roles

✔ Can remain calm, patient, and resilient in challenging situations

✔ Has strong communication and relationship-building skills

✔ Understands the importance of consistency and positive reinforcement

✔ Is passionate about helping young people achieve their potential

This role could be perfect for:

* Teaching Assistants looking to specialise in behaviour support
* Youth Workers
* Sports Coaches
* Residential Support Workers
* Graduates considering a career in teaching, psychology, counselling, or social work
* Anyone with experience supporting young people with additional needs

Why work in SEMH settings?

The impact you make goes far beyond the classroom.

One day, you might help a pupil re-engage with learning. The next, you could be the reason a young person feels heard, valued, and ready to take their next step forward.

The relationships you build can genuinely change lives.
