The Role: As a materials engineer you will provide support to the business using your knowledge and area expertise to ensure fit and suitable manufacturing processes and parts. Using a combination of failure analysis and investigation techniques, you will help solve technical issues to ensure product delivery and quality. The role requires working in a task‑driven laboratory environment with a team of specialist technicians and engineers and developing technical manufacturing solutions for unfamiliar processes.
Responsibilities
* Perform material and assembly failure analysis in a detailed, systematic and thorough manner.
* Support the broader business via manufacturing, engineering and quality teams in technical investigations.
* Produce technical reports for a variety of internal customers, both technical and non‑technical.
* Manage lab equipment such as grinding and polishing equipment, optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscope.
* Collaborate with other functions of the lab to ensure robust and well‑rounded analysis.
* Act as a point of contact as a materials engineer to provide on‑hand technical advice.
* Engage and support risk assessments for technical processes and equipment.
Essential Experience
* Material analysis through conventional techniques such as microsection and light microscopy.
* Operation and interpretation of SEM and EDX techniques and data.
* Good understanding of the fundamentals of high‑temperature joining techniques including brazing and welding.
Examples of Experience
* Experience with assembly and failure mode of vacuum electronic assemblies.
* Experience with the metallurgy of copper, nickel‑copper alloys, steels and braze alloys.
* Processing of components for the assembly of vacuum electronics.
* Adhesive selection and properties analysis.
* Assessment, interpretation and review of technical drawings to confirm design intent and manufacturing suitability.
* Mechanical destructive testing.
