The position allows continuous learning about the most current and innovative therapies across a multitude of clinical specialities.

You will work within both the Clinical Commissioning & Medicines Optimisation Team and the Medicines Information team. As part of your role you will interact with a diverse range of individuals, including multi-disciplinary members of staff at the Trust and from external healthcare providers, as well as direct patient enquiries.

We are looking for an adaptable individual who can collect, process and clearly communicate information in a variety of ways. This is a new role in both teams and provides an exciting opportunity for the successful candidate to develop the role in line with the Pharmacy department’s strategy and vision.


Main duties of the job

To work with the Advanced Specialist Pharmacist – Formulary and Medicines Optimisation with the co-ordination, preparation and management of independent reviews of medicines (new and existing) for discussion at the Trust Drugs and Therapeutics Meetings.

To support the Advanced Specialist Pharmacist – Formulary and Medicines Optimisation with overseeing the implementation of formulary decisions made by the Devon-wide formulary group at UHP, as appropriate, ensuring the pharmacy stock management system remains accurate.

To work with the Lead Pharmacist Clinical Commissioning and Medicines Optimisation in providing expert advice regarding the use of high cost medicines at UHP, delivering efficiencies and ensuring best value use of medicines across the organisation.

To have a supportive role, in the review of high cost medicines, including those routinely commissioned via Blueteq, and those not routinely funded via individual funding requests (IFRs).

To support the lead pharmacist for Medicines Information and Advice by using specialist professional skills and judgement to answer medicines related enquiries from health care professionals and patients. To also engage with developing the MI service, supporting the provision of MI training to a variety of pharmacy professionals and to be an active participant in managing the MI workload. To have a supportive role in the development of relevant guidelines, protocols, and SOPs within area of expertise.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

· To support the Advanced Specialist Pharmacist – Formulary and Medicines Optimisation with the maintenance of the UHP Formulary and implementation of the Devon-wide Formulary within the Trust.

· To work as part of the Clinical Commissioning and Medicines Optimisation (CCMO) team to manage urgent requests for non-formulary or non-commissioned medication across all specialties.To co-ordinate and manage a system to review and receive updates relating to individual patient requests for non-formulary and/or non-commissioned medicine request

· To co-produce Trust wide formulary bulletins monthly.

· To present complex information formally and informally at individual, small and large group levels, and using initiative, tact and persuasive skills to secure positive engagement including provision of formulary advice to members of the UHP pharmacy clinical team, UHP clinicians and staff at the UHP outpatient pharmacy.

· Provide high level, robust, critical appraisals of all new drug applications for inclusion on the monthly Drugs and Therapeutics Committee meeting.

· Take in enquiries to the service by telephone, email, letter, and in person, from health professionals and members of the public, working to current UKMi and departmental standards. Ensure that adequate details are taken from the enquirer as far as is possible to establish accurately the background and clinical perspective to the enquiry, communicating effectively and appropriately with the enquirer according to the enquirer’s role and experience.

· In collaboration with the MI Manager, ensure workload is managed appropriately, prioritised and deadlines met. Provide day-to-day supervision and support of junior staff who may be attached to the service, including trainee pharmacists.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***


Person specification


Qualifications

* Masters Degree in Pharmacy.
* Registered member of the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
* Postgraduate certificate in clinical pharmacy or equivalent.
* Proven evidence of Continuing Professional Development.
* Post-Graduate Diploma/MSc in Clinical Pharmacy or working towards this or equivalent demonstrable experience
* Completed the UKMI MI training course or willing to undertake it
* Further clinical, research or management qualification
* Current registration with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS)
* Member of the United Kingdom Clinical Pharmacy Association (UKCPA)
* Working towards RPS faculty submission
* Non-medical prescriber (or must be willing to undertake this when requested)


Knowledge & Experience

* Excellent interpersonal skills.
* Proven understanding of hospital pharmacy systems.
* Excellent IT skills including demonstrably experienced user of MS Office.
* Demonstrable experience of working with MDTs and committees.
* Demonstrable post-registration experience.
* Clinical demonstrable experience across a range of specialities
* Demonstrable experience working within the High Cost Drugs Field (e.g. tariff excluded medicines, Blueteq, immunoglobulin etc.)
* Demonstrable experience of communicating highly complex drug information or medicine related information to prescribers, clinicians, where professionals may challenge the advice
* Critical appraisal of clinical evidence.
* Demonstrable experience of Medicines Information


Aptitude and Abilities

* Excellent written and oral communication skills and able to communicate effectively with clinical staff, patients and relatives.
* Proven knowledge and understanding of financial issues
* Teaching and presentation skills
