Healthcare Support Worker - Brynheulog ward

Brynheulog ward is the Stroke /intensive rehabilitation ward for the north of Powys. We are a 15-bed unit we work as a multi-disciplinary team caring for patient who require intensive rehabilitation to return to their place of discharge. The role of the HCSW on our ward is working as a part of the wider team to deliver a high standard of care under the supervision of registered health professionals.

The successful candidate would be expected to plan and prioritise their delegated workload, ensuring that tasks are completed efficiently, safely and effectively using their own initiative to prioritise the work‑based needs of patients, adjusting to ensure emergency and priority tasks are completed in a timely manner.

To undertake care as directed by the registered nurse following agreed care plans, providing information to the registered nurse that will enable the monitoring of patients and amendment of care plans.

Clear concise documentation using the Powys teaching health board system an understanding of clinical governance and confidentiality.

To be a part of ward meetings and huddles to ensure good communication and sharing of knowledge.


Job responsibilities

Work as part of the multidisciplinary team delivering care to patients with support and supervision provided by a registered health care professional. Undertakes personal care activities and clinical care duties with minimal support and supervision as delegated by a registered healthcare professional in accordance with the HEIW All Wales Guidelines for Delegation. Ensures the registered healthcare professional is regularly updated on the patients/clients condition and progress. Ensures the working environment is safe and hygienic following infection prevention and control policies and processes. Contributes to the teaching and supervision of students and junior staff. Delivers role in accordance with Health Board Values and Code of Conduct for HCSWs in Wales.

We would particularly welcome applications from Welsh speakers; but even if you dont speak any Welsh, or want to develop your skills, dont worry: the health board will support you with training.


Qualifications

* Level 3 qualification in a health care related subject OR equivalent experience and can evidence work-based competency demonstrating theoretical knowledge, and the ability to undertake clinical care duties relevant for the role which is gained through experience and worked-based training/short courses.
* Knowledge of the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers in Wales and All Wales Delegation Guidelines (HEIW).
* Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures within a healthcare setting e.g. the principles of Safeguarding adults/children to keep patients within their care safe, and confidentiality e.g. General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR).


Experience

* Experience of working within a relevant health or social care environment, providing direct patient care.
* Experience of working with patient groups relevant to area of practice.
* Experience of working within the NHS.


Skills and attributes

* Good communication skills – verbal and written, with the ability to convey information clearly and sensitively.
* Ability to work with minimum supervision to a high standard.
* Ability to keep calm in stressful situations.
* Ability to demonstrate a caring and compassionate approach.
* Organisational skills, with the ability to plan and prioritise own and others workload efficiently.
* Ability to use technology to undertake the role e.g. Microsoft Office, virtual platforms such as TEAMS.
* Physically able to carry out the duties of the role, including lifting, assisting with mobility, and performing other manual tasks.
* Some ability to speak, read and/or write Welsh, or an eagerness to learn.


Other

* Ability to work a range of shift patterns.
