Job Summary
We have an exciting opportunity for an apprentice dental nurse to join our friendly practice based in Oxford. This role involves providing chairside support and delivering a high level of oral health care to patients. You will receive ongoing support, development, and training to equip you with the skills and knowledge required to qualify and build a successful career in dental nursing.
Responsibilities
* Identify and understand relevant dental anatomy and the diversity of patient populations.
* Evaluate health risks associated with prescribed, non‑prescribed and recreational drug use.
* Apply the scientific principles underpinning dental materials and biomaterials.
* Recognise signs of abuse, neglect or emotional trauma and explain safeguarding systems.
* Assess patients’ levels of anxiety, experience and expectations regarding dental care.
* Contribute to special investigations and diagnostic procedures.
* Undertake orthodontic assessment where required.
* Obtain valid consent from patients, integrating legal requirements where appropriate.
* Record accurate and contemporaneous patient histories, dental charting and oral health assessments.
* Prepare records, imaging equipment, and materials for clinical assessment.
* Process and manage dental radiographs and images.
* Provide chairside support to the operator during treatment.
* Prepare, mix and handle dental materials safely.
* Implement effective decontamination and infection control procedures in line with current guidelines.
* Maintain and disinfect the clinical environment, instruments and equipment.
* Manage patient anxiety and use communication and behavioural techniques to reassure patients.
* Identify changes in patients’ oral health status and take appropriate action.
* Arrange follow‑up care as prescribed by the operator.
* Recognise, assess and manage medical emergencies.
* Deliver comprehensive, personalised preventive advice and interventions to patients and carers.
* Support management of patients with acute oral conditions.
* Adopt an evidence‑based approach to clinical practice.
* Communicate effectively with patients, the public, and dental team members via spoken, written and electronic means.
* Provide empathetic, compassionate and respectful patient care at all times.
* Collaborate with the wider healthcare team, contributing to effective team working.
* Maintain up‑to‑date, accurate patient records in accordance with legal and best practice standards.
* Support professional development and continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
* English language proficiency, ideally grade 4 or equivalent.
* Mathematics proficiency, ideally grade 4 or equivalent.
* Strong communication and customer‑care skills.
* High attention to detail and organisational abilities.
* A passion for working within the dental sector and a genuine desire to help patients.
* Hepatitis B vaccination and a clear enhanced DBS check.
* Willingness to undertake apprenticeship training and complete Level 3 Dental Nurse apprenticeship requirements.
Training & Development
The apprenticeship provides employment and training within a dental practice to study the Level 3 Dental Nurse apprenticeship. You will receive practical training in clinical duties, including infection prevention and control, professional practice in dental nursing, and other core dental skills. The apprenticeship includes formal training sessions, online theory, and 1‑to‑1 coaching from experienced staff.

Salary
£15,704 to £25,396.80, depending on your age and position within the apprenticeship.
