Reporting to: Headteacher
Main purpose
The Assistant Headteacher (AHT) for Teaching and Learning will support the Headteacher in the strategic leadership and day-to-day management of the school. This role is dedicated to driving up standards of achievement for all pupils by ensuring the delivery of a progressive, ambitious, and high-quality curriculum. The AHT will uphold the Catholic aims and ethos of the school, ensuring every child is cherished, nurtured, and challenged.
Duties and responsibilities
Strategic Leadership and School Improvement
Vision and Ethos: Communicate the school’s vision compellingly and uphold the Catholic ethos in all aspects of school life.
Strategic Planning: Contribute to whole-school self-evaluation and the School Development Plan (SDP), formulating and implementing policies to achieve school aims.
Standards and Monitoring: Monitor progress toward school objectives and use whole-school data to inform future improvement strategies.
Resource Management: Manage and monitor budgets within the Teaching and Learning remit and establish long-term plans for resourcing.
Curriculum Excellence and Development
Curriculum Design: Ensure a progressive curriculum is in place that reflects the school context and is ambitious for all pupils.
Subject Leadership: Develop the skills of Subject Leaders to conduct thorough monitoring, complete action plans, and record findings to share with the SLT.
Coverage and Assessment: Ensure curriculum coverage across all year groups, including the implementation and review of Key Learning Indicators (KLIs).
Communication: Ensure termly curriculum overviews are shared with parents at the start of each term.
Teaching, Learning, and Assessment
Quality First Teaching (QFT): Lead staff in delivering high-quality, inclusive teaching and monitor the quality of learning across the school.
Classroom Practice: Model excellence in the classroom; the AHT may be required to teach a designated class or provide cover for part-time roles and staff absences.
Leadership Cover: Provide teacher cover when required to release members of the wider SLT for leadership time.
Planning and Triangulation: Ensure long and medium-term planning is completed and saved centrally; triangulate planning with KLIs and evidence of pupil learning.
Inclusion: Promote practices that allow all pupils, including those with SEND, to access the curriculum with high expectations.
Leading and Developing Staff
Professional Development: Provide and coordinate CPD opportunities and training to enhance staff skills and personal development.
Mentoring: Act as a mentor for Early Career Teachers (ECTs) and support the development of student teachers and other staff.
Appraisal: Participate in and, where appropriate, lead the school’s appraisal procedures to ensure staff professionalism.
Collaboration: Build effective professional relationships with colleagues and external professionals.
Pupil Wellbeing and Behaviour
Behaviour Culture: Promote and evaluate the school's behaviour policy to maintain an environment of high learning standards.
Safeguarding: Act as a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), maintaining accurate records and promoting a culture where children feel safe.
Attendance: Monitor pupil attendance and analyse data to ensure continuous improvement.
Mental Health: Collaborate with the Mental Health Lead to develop wellbeing policies and support pupil wellbeing.
General Leadership Duties
Operational Management: Lead whole-school assemblies and carry out gate or lunch duties as required.
Communication: Communicate effectively and professionally with parents, carers, governors, and other stakeholders.
Duty of Care: Prioritise the safety and welfare of children, following all school policies and the staff code of conduct.
Personal and professional conduct
Uphold public trust in the profession and maintain high standards of ethics and behaviour, within and outside school
Have proper and professional regard for the ethos, policies and practices of the school, and maintain high standards of attendance and punctuality
Understand and act within the statutory frameworks setting out their professional duties and responsibilities
Prioritise and manage own time effectively
The member of SLT will be required to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people, and follow school policies and the staff code of conduct.
