An exciting opportunity has arisen for Band 6 midwives to join our dedicated team at Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust providing a high standard of antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal midwifery care to women and their families in Leeds.

Leeds maternity service is continually changing and evolving to meet the needs of our population and ensure our families have a positive birthing experience. We are looking for midwives who are experienced, professional, kind and passionate about delivering patient centred care.

By joining our multi-disciplinary team you will have the opportunity to bring your wealth of knowledge and experience to our maternity service and rotate within all clinical areas of the maternity services to support professional development and maintain safe standards of midwifery care.

Main duties of the job

Maintain a high standard of women centred care in accordance with Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust guidelines and policies. Act as a referral agent and co-ordinator of care provision. Establishes effective multi-agency collaboration across the primary/secondary interface to meet the needs of the patients. Act as a role model for the development of clinical skills and knowledge within the department team. Maintain a safe working environment. Support the Senior Midwife in setting and monitoring standards and seek to continuously improve standards and the quality of patient care, including national standards. Promote evidence based practice. Participate in the audit and evaluation of clinical practice in the interests of promoting quality care. Provide assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of midwifery care for women and their babies, ensuring written records are kept to NMC standards.

Leeds Teaching Hospital Maternity Services support the birth of approximately 9000 babies per year. We are a tertiary unit with the largest Fetal Medicine Unit in the North. We also have a Quaternary Paediatric and Cardiac Surgery unit the largest Congenital Cardiac Service in the North of England and we are specialists in Prematurity Prevention for Y&H.

Job description

Job Title: Midwife

Reports to: Senior Midwife Team Leader

Band: 6

Unit/Department: Maternity Unit/community midwifery.

Directorate: Womens CSU

Location Leeds General Infirmary/St James's University Hospital/Community

JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY

The post holder is responsible for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care, and may be required to teach other midwives and non-midwifery staff. They take responsibility as the prime care provider for a group of women.

The post holder is a prime care provider who is required to practice clinical skills developed through experience but at a more advanced level than required for those who have just qualified as midwives.

The post holder is designated to take charge of a ward in the absence of the person who has continuing responsibility.

The maternity unit has approximately 10,000 births a year. LTHT is a tertiary referral centre for both obstetrics and neonatology. Other specialities within the hospital that impact on maternity unit are feto-maternal medicine, adult and neonatal cardiology, neonatal surgery and a reproductive medicine unit.


Person Specification

Experience Essential

* Significant experience as a midwife or equivalent within speciality
* Working with a wide range of professionals including medical and management colleagues
* Insight into clinical speciality
* Insight into current issues in midwifery/professional issues
* Standards of professional practice

Additional Requirements Essential

* Able to fulfil Occupational Health requirements for post
* Car Driver - with a full driving licence (desirable)

Qualifications Essential

* Degree or equivalent
* NMC Registered Midwife
* Successful completion of the LTHT Midwifery Preceptorship program (or equivalent)

Desirable

* Teaching/assessing qualification (Desirable)
