Consultant Midwife – Intrapartum, Complex Care & Clinical Quality

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUH) is seeking an exceptional Consultant Midwife to provide expert leadership for intrapartum care, complex births and clinical quality improvement across maternity services.
This is a senior clinical leadership role for an autonomous expert practitioner with a strong focus on safety, complex decision‑making and reducing unwarranted variation, ensuring high‑quality, compassionate care for women, babies and families.
Main duties of the role
Working closely with the Director of Midwifery and the Midwifery Leadership Team, the postholder will:
1. Provide senior clinical leadership for intrapartum safety and complex births
2. Lead development and oversight of complex care pathways
3. Drive clinical quality improvement and perinatal surveillance
4. Support learning from incidents, reviews and complaints, embedding improvement
5. Strengthen multidisciplinary working and intrapartum education, training and simulation
The role combines a minimum of % expert clinical practice with professional leadership, consultancy, education and research through the four pillars of advanced practice.

Person specification
You will be:
11. A Registered Midwife
12. Educated to Master’s level or equivalent
13. An expert in intrapartum care and complexity
14. An experienced senior clinical leader with credibility across multidisciplinary teams
15. Committed to improving safety, quality, equity and experience in maternity care
Working for our organisation
Here in Oxfordshire, we offer a unique set up of our Maternity Services with around babies born annually.
We have stand-alone Midwifery-Led Birth units within the county. These are based at Banbury, Chipping Norton, Wantage and Wallingford and we also offer home births to all areas. There is also an integrated Midwifery-Led birth unit, where around % of women and birthing people choose to go in labour. As a tertiary hospital, the John Radcliffe is composed of a Delivery Suite with Maternity Theatres and a specific Maternity Recovery Ward. We work closely with specialist services such as the Fetal and Maternal Medicine Unit, Breech Team, and Maternity Bereavement Teams. Midwives employed within the service have the opportunity to rotate to all our units/departments providing care to both low and high risk women.
