Paediatric Urology Clinical Nurse Specialist

Band 6

Fixed Term 12 months Maternity leave cover

We are seeking a dynamic, energetic and committed nurse with excellent organisational and interpersonal skills to work with the paediatric urology team under the leadership of the lead clinical nurse specialist at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.

The role of the urology nurse is an integral part of the multi-disciplinary team providing nursing experience and professional leadership within the patient and community setting. To assist in the management of paediatric urology patients delivering holistic, high quality, clinically effective care to patients/ families and carers on the wards, clinic and community settings. To provide information, education and advice for patients, families and other professionals within the clinical speciality.


Main duties of the job

* In conjunction with the urology clinical nurse specialist, undertake assessment of patient’s needs with urology conditions. Negotiate appropriate holistic packages of care to effectively meet these needs and the needs of the family.
* Deliver specialist evidence based care to children with urology conditions under the guidance from the urology clinical nurse specialist.
* To assist in the collation and recording of quantitative and qualitative data that provides evidence of productivity, outcomes and quality, through audit and research.
* Participate in nurse led clinics and services including Uroflow/ bladder scanning/ PTNS (percutaneous Tibia nerve stimulation)/ LUTS (lower urinary tract symptoms clinic) and Urodynamics studies under the direction of the urology specialist nurse.
* Undertake treatment/ procedures as required dealing with bodily waste products.
* Provide telephone advice to patient’s and serve as appoint of contact for other professionals.
* Provide support and advice for children with continence issues, their parents/ carers and families.
* Work closely with professionals in primary and secondary care, to plan discharge and ensure high standards across the continuum.
* Undertake continence promotion and comprehensive assessment, where appropriate, for the provision of urology products taking account of health and safety guidelines and relevant trust policies.

Qualifications & Training


Essential criteria

* RGN. Paediatric 1st Level or relevant children’s qualification
* Current NMC Registration
* 1st Degree in nursing or health related subject or working towards
* Relevant accredited post registration qualification at level 3
* Qualification in Teaching, assessing and Mentoring
* Willingness to work towards Masters level academic study


Knowledge & Experience


Essential criteria

* Appropriate post registration experience in nursing and speciality
* Appropriate proven leadership and management experience
* Proven commitment and experience, evidence in teaching
* Experience as preceptor / mentor


Desirable criteria

* Experience of undertaking research or audit projects
* Evidence of commitment to research based practice or evidence of project work undertaken
