Overview

An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, conscientious and dedicated maintenance craftsperson (Mechanical) to join a team of engineering craftsperson responsible for the maintenance and repair of mechanical plant and equipment at buildings maintained by CHoICE Facilities Services. The role requires the post holder to undertake the role of Competent Person (CP) as defined within Health Technical Memorandum (HTM) 00 for multiple engineer services and to support CHoICE to meet its statutory, mandatory and best practice commitments to its existing partners. The post holder will be flexible with a wide ranging knowledge of mechanical systems to ensure maintenance, repair and installation activities are completed efficiently while delivering high-quality services. The role includes operating and maintaining large scale mechanical systems such as AHUs, LTHW systems, steam plant, pressure systems, medical gas systems, refrigeration plant and BMS control. The role also requires participation in the current CHoICE rolling 365 day shift pattern/system, on-call rota, and overtime when required, for which appropriate payments will be made.


Responsibilities

* To undertake actual maintenance and installation work/activities across the full range of engineering services managed/maintained by CHoICE Facilities Services (CFS).
* To conduct surveys, inspections, fault finding, servicing and rectification of engineering system faults, and to provide technical advice, guidance and, where appropriate, supervision to other CFS staff, contractors and Trust colleagues.
* To participate in the current CFS shift pattern/system and current on-call rota and undertake overtime when the service needs dictate, with appropriate payments made.
* Provide technical guidance and, where necessary, supervision to other staff and contractors.


Qualifications and Experience

* Essential – Knowledge and experience of Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing systems typically found within a large NHS Acute Trust.
* Essential – Detailed knowledge and experience of mechanical system requirements and regulations typically found within a large NHS Acute Trust, acquired through qualifications and relevant experience.
* Essential – Complex fault diagnosis, interpreting technical issues and formulating technical solutions to improve performance and maintain the service.
* Essential – Suitable and sufficient experience as a competent person able to accept a permit to work from an authorised person.
* Desirable – Experience of working within an NHS Hospital Environment; Experience of operating Building Management Systems (BMS).


Physical Skills

* Essential – Able to travel and work at all Trust sites.
* Essential – Ability to undertake moderate physical activities for long periods; ability to undertake regular moving and handling activities; high-level manual dexterity for fine tools.


Qualifications

* Essential – Basic numeracy and literacy skills to level 1 or equivalent; Basic IT Skills.
* Essential – BTEC/ONC, City & Guilds or NVQ level 3 or equivalent in a suitable engineering discipline.
* Essential – Completion of recognised and accredited apprenticeship in a relevant engineering discipline.
* Desirable – City & Guilds quarterly testing of large porous sterilizers; quarterly testing of washers/disinfectors; Legionella Management Competent Person certificate; HVAC Competent Person Certificate.


Skills and Knowledge

* Essential – Able to use own initiative in problem solving and adapt to changing demands, including emergencies; ability to prioritise workload to meet patient care and SLA targets.
* Essential – Regularly communicate information with Estates staff, Trust colleagues and external contacts; self-motivated to improve current practices; sensitivity to clinical staff/patients where Estates works impact clinical services.
* Essential – Able to operate computer systems such as electronic asbestos register, labour management system, pneumatic tube system, building management system and fire alarm systems; flexible approach to working hours and on-call requirements.
* Desirable – Knowledge of HTMs; knowledge of planned preventive maintenance systems; knowledge of building management systems (BMS).
