Clinical Nurse Specialist, Community Paediatrics

Band 7 (Band 6 until V300 non‑medical prescribing qualification is completed)


About the role

We are seeking a qualified nurse (RN, RSCN, RMN, RLDN) to work within our multidisciplinary team of paediatricians, nurses and support workers in order to deliver high‑quality care.

Roles include developing your skills, working in a supportive team and training to become a Clinical Nurse Specialist.


Main duties of the job

* Lead assessment, diagnosis and support of children with neuro‑developmental disorders (ADHD, ASD) within a multi‑disciplinary team.
* Independently conduct assessments and diagnosis of ADHD for a defined cohort and initiate and manage medication, including independent prescribing.
* Redesign and develop services and pathways delivered from the Child Development Centre.
* Participate in projects and trust‑wide initiatives, contribute to audits and research.

Job responsibilities

* Conduct clinical interviews, take medical and developmental history, observe behaviour and interpret standardised assessments to diagnose neuro‑developmental conditions.
* Demonstrate high clinical judgement and autonomous practice.
* Discuss assessment outcomes with child/young person, carers and health professionals, promote health education and self‑management.
* Start, monitor and adjust pharmacological treatments and liaise with GP following Shared Care Protocols.
* Provide specialist advice aligned with NICE guidance and local treatment guidelines.
* Contribute to transition planning with adult services.
* Plan workload to meet changing service needs; coordinate with other services to streamline care pathways.
* Participate in and lead specific projects within the department and across the trust.
* Develop and review policies, clinical pathways and guidelines.
* Provide monthly activity data as required; participate in service development activities.
* Implement audits or research findings to improve services.
* Support parents via educational courses and provide specialist nursing expertise across professional boundaries.
* Demonstrate communication skills to work with children, families, staff and vulnerable children in care.


Prescribing responsibilities

This role requires independent non‑medical prescribing; candidates with a V300 qualification will practice as a prescriber.


People Management

* Provide line management supervision where appropriate.
* Assist in development of induction programmes and learning environment for staff and students.
* Participate in staff appraisal and continuous education.
* Stay updated on trust policy and relevant legislation.


Person specification


Qualifications & Training

* Registered Nurse/ Learning Disability (RNLD), Mental Health (RNMH) Children's Nurse (RNC)
* Independent Non‑Medical Prescriber qualification (V300) or willingness to undertake training within 18 months.
* Paediatric Top‑to‑Toe physical assessment and examination skills or willingness to undertake training.
* Postgraduate learning in neuro‑developmental disorders, e.g., ADHD, ASD – ADOS‑trained or similar.
* Experience in diagnosing and supporting children and young people with ADHD and ASD.
* Master’s level qualification or equivalent experience.


Experience

* Extensive experience working with children/young people and families with complex needs, especially ADHD & ASD.
* Experience in Quality Improvement and service development, implementing changes within timeframes.
* Conducted clinical audit and monitored implementation of recommendations.
* Familiar with QB‑Tests.
* Knowledge of statutory and voluntary sectors with regard to mental health and well‑being.
* Knowledge of legislation concerning children’s health needs and inter‑relationships with health, education and social care (EHCP, SEND, Early Help).


Knowledge & Skills

* Literate in IT/Computer skills – Microsoft Office and electronic child records (SystmOne).
* Effective communication with multi‑agency colleagues at all levels, negotiation and conflict resolution.
* Proficient handling of complex and emotive issues.
* Advanced IT skills including MS Office and SystmOne.
* Analytical skills to review data.
