Job Description
Role: Senior Electrical Design Engineer
Location: Southampton
Salary: Up to £50,000
Our client is seeking an experienced and technically strong Senior Electrical Design Engineer to lead and deliver complex electrical design solutions across a range of engineering projects. The successful candidate will play a key role in the full project lifecycle, from concept and detailed design through to commissioning and handover, while providing technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers.
Responsibilities
* Lead the electrical design of projects, ensuring compliance with relevant standards, legislation, and client requirements
* Produce and review detailed electrical design documentation, including schematics, wiring diagrams, layouts, calculations, and specifications
* Carry out electrical calculations such as load studies, fault levels, cable sizing,
* Provide technical guidance, support, and mentoring to junior and graduate engineers
* Review and approve designs produced by others, ensuring technical accuracy and quality
* Liaise with clients, contractors, suppliers, and internal stakeholders to resolve technical issues and deliver project requirements
* Support project planning, cost estimation, and risk assessments
* Participate in design reviews, HAZOPs, and safety assessments where required
* Support commissioning activities and provide technical assistance during installation and testing
* Identify opportunities for design improvement, standardisation, and innovation
Skills and experience:
* Proven experience in a senior electrical design role within an engineering or industrial environment
* Strong knowledge of electrical power systems, control systems, and electrical safety
* Experience producing and checking detailed electrical designs and calculations
* Proficient with electrical design software such as AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, ETAP, Amtech, or similar
* Strong understanding of applicable electrical standards and regulations
* Ability to lead technical discussions and make sound engineering decisions
* Experience within sectors such as energy, industrial automation, manufacturing, utilities, or infrastructure
* Experience with PLCs, control panels, or instrumentation design
* Knowledge of functional safety standards (e.g. IEC 61508 / 61511)
