Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, hardworking, motivated Occupational Therapist to join our Trauma and Orthopaedic Team. The team provides an inpatient service to a dedicated Trauma and Orthopaedic ward, an outreach service for patients being discharged into the community and in reach to Fracture Clinic. This post is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Band 5 or a current Band 6 looking for a challenge and aiming to develop specialist skills as well as managerial and leadership capabilities. We operate a 7-day service. The successful candidate will become an integral member of the Multi-Disciplinary Team, promoting a positive experience and outcomes for our patients. The ability to work closely with Physiotherapists and undertake generic therapy assessments and treatments to a high level is essential. Previous experience of working with Orthopaedic patients and the ability to work flexibly and adaptably to changing working patterns are required.

Responsibilities

* Deliver a high standard of evidence-based care.
* Be confident in assessment and decision making.
* Lead and support others in discharge planning within the MDT, including making recommendations about rehabilitation needs and discharge/placement requirements.
* Work with senior therapy colleagues to ensure efficient running of the team and department, including workload coordination within the team.
* Identify areas for improvement and lead projects to achieve change.
* Supervise therapy assistants, rotational Occupational Therapists and students on clinical placement within the specialty.
* Be professional and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of your own work and the management of patients/clients in your care.
* Maintain a high standard of clinical care and support junior staff to do likewise.
* Undertake comprehensive assessments of patients/clients, including those with complex presentations, using specialist clinical reasoning to provide accurate diagnoses.
* Formulate and deliver individual treatment programmes based on evidence-based practice, initial diagnoses, prognoses, and comprehensive discharge plans.
* Take delegated responsibility from Band 7 clinicians for managing patients with certain conditions and provide specialist assessment and treatment plans.
* Evaluate patient progress, reassess, and adjust treatment programmes as required.
* Demonstrate self-directed/lone working ability in various locations.


Administrative & Professional Responsibilities

* Maintain professional registration and work within Trust guidelines, HCPC, and national/local standards; monitor quality of practice.
* Be responsible for a designated area of work, plan and organise caseload efficiently, and manage time for self and junior staff.
* Be responsible for equipment used in clinical duties and ensure safe use through teaching, training, and supervision.
* Provide advice, teaching, and instruction to relatives, carers, and other professionals to promote understanding of treatment aims and ensure a consistent approach to patient care.
* Provide specialist clinical advice to colleagues in other clinical areas and to the MDT regarding management of patients.
* Train, supervise and performance manage junior staff and students; use formal appraisal documentation where appropriate.
* Communicate effectively with patients and carers to maximise understanding of their condition, assess capacity, obtain informed consent, and work within legal frameworks when patients lack capacity.
* Maintain tact and diplomacy; use highly developed communication skills in challenging situations including potential complaints per Trust Policy.


Teaching & Training Responsibilities

* Maintain own CPD; stay abreast of trends and developments and support junior staff to do likewise.
* Participate in training programmes, deliver presentations and training sessions, attend staff meetings and external courses, and act as a reflective practitioner.
* Engage in supervision schemes as supervisor and supervisee.


Line Management & Supervision

* Demonstrate leadership by delivering change to improve service delivery; influence, motivate, and enable others in the Therapy Team.
* Provide specialist advice and guidance to ensure best practice across disciplines in assessment, treatment, and long-term management of patients.
* Deputise for the Band 7 in operational issues; take responsibility for own and team decisions affecting service delivery.
* Participate in policy development within the speciality and undertake other duties as required by senior staff.


Clinical Governance, Research & Audit

* Adhere to the Registrant Body code of Ethics and Professional Conduct; promote compliance with local and national standards.
* Implement policy and service development changes as directed; apply clinical governance and risk management to daily work.
* Measure and evaluate practice using evidence-based projects, audits, and outcome measures; make recommendations and implement changes under supervision.
* Support research activity and engage in practice development, evaluation, audit, and research relevant to the service.
