Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Medical Retina Clinical Fellow to join the Ophthalmology team. The post offers valuable experience through specialist outpatient clinics and participation in a cataract theatre list. The successful candidate will work predominantly within the Macular Treatment Centre, developing expertise in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of medical retinal conditions including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vein occlusions.
Main duties of the job
This post is intended for applicants who are near the end of a postgraduate ophthalmology training, or practicing ophthalmologists with similar experience, who are looking to develop further their practical clinical expertise.
This post will offer training and experience in the field of medical retina. We will provide cataract surgery training to interested candidates.
Main duties of the job:
* Participate in specialist Medical Retina clinics and treatment services
* Assess, diagnose, and manage patients with retinal disease
* Support intravitreal injection and imaging pathways
* Contribute to cataract theatre sessions
* Work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary Ophthalmology team
* Participate in departmental teaching, audit, and service development activities
Working for our organisation
The REI has recently moved to a new purpose-built building, the three-storey unit will see an increased number of treatment rooms, expanded paediatric facilities and better access for patients. The new site includes a dedicated high flow cataract theatre and will also see the addition of a third theatre, which will further increase our capacity to treat sub-specialities such as oculoplastic, orbital and corneal surgeries.
The REI new build gives us the space and facilities to continue to develop an excellent future service, both locally and across the region as a specialist centre.

Person specification
Education, qualifications and special training
* 3 years or more of Ophthalmology training FULL GMC Registration.
* MRCOphth
* FRCS, FRCOphth or equivalent
Knowledge and skills
* Competent to undertake unsupervised new and follow-up outpatient clinics.
* Good knowledge of retinal laser treatment
Experience
* Ability to work unsupervised. Broad experience of the management of common eye diseases.
* Ophthalmic sub specialty experience.
Personal skills
* Flexibility. Recognition of personal limitations and preparedness to seek advice. Good communication skills. Good clinical skills.
* An interest in acquiring ophthalmic subspecialty skills. An interest in teaching.
Practical requirements
* Ability to work hours of the job and participate in the 1st on call rota.
* You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
