The hilly terrain, exposed conditions, and constantly changing weather make this a physically demanding role, but also incredibly rewarding. You’ll join a small, supportive Ranger team led by the Area Ranger, working closely with colleagues across the estate, especially those in facilities, forestry, gardens, and visitor experience to ensure the site is ready to open each day. The work is varied, fast‑paced, and broad in scope: no two days look the same, and teamwork underpins everything we do.Your day may involve practical maintenance such as vegetation clearance, strimming, mowing, small path repairs, and ensuring car parks are neat and welcoming. You’ll operate a range of machinery and equipment confidently and safely, and you’ll also drive site vehicles including pickups, UTVs, and ride‑on machines as part of your daily work. Each morning, you’ll help open the estate by unlocking buildings, barriers, and access points, before supporting the flow of vehicles and visitors during busy periods. Safety is a constant priority, and you’ll assist with carrying out critical inspections across the site while also responding to incidents such as first aid incidents, or lost persons. Working alongside volunteers will be a regular part of your week as well as supporting the work of the wider team. While you’ll contribute to conservation‑related work where it aligns with operational needs, your primary focus will remain on presentation, access, and the overall visitor experience. You’ll be required to be First Aid At Work qualified and have a full driving license. The National Trust has the motto ‘For everyone, for ever’ at its heart.
